Blue Bear Notes
Mashburn Elementary
Our 20-21 school year has gotten off to a GREAT start. It truly takes Everyone Together – WE Mashburn - to make sure the school is ready for students especially this year. I want to thank all parents for being supportive and encouraging during all the many different adjustments. Teachers thank you for all your willingness to make changes as needed and adapt to new procedures to ensure students receive what they need. Students have been incredible with following PAWS and working diligently. It is so wonderful to be working with students face to face and virtually. I am truly humbled each day as EVERYONE is so willing to contribute in any way to ensure students have a GREAT educational experience. Thank you very much. At Mashburn it is evident - “Together We are Better”!!!!
Sincerely,
Carla Gravitt

A Message From Nurse Jamie
Dear Mashburn families,
It’s been so good to see all our students’ smiling faces again! As we are getting settled into the 2020-2021 school year, I’d like to take a moment and ask the parents of students with health conditions to please ensure that they have been listed on their profile in parent portal. If you see that something needs to be included, please give me a call at 770 889 1630 x750113 or email me at jtroup@forsyth.k12.ga.us. I can assist you with getting the required documentation submitted so that I may enter the info in Infinite Campus. This will help all teachers and staff who work with your child be aware of any healthcare needs your child has; and will help us keep them safe. For those students who will/may require any medication or nurse assistance at school, please bring in an appropriate care plan and/or request to administer medication form completed by your child’s physician and signed by you, so that I know exactly what your child’s needs are and how to provide for them. Please remember that all medications at school must be brought by a parent/adult and given directly to myself or other designated adult in the front office. As a reminder, students are never to carry medication to/at school unless they have an authorization to carry medication form on file in the clinic. All forms you might need are on the school website https://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/mashburn, and can be found under Student Support, School Nurse, Forms. If there is anything you need, but don’t see, please call or email me, and I can help. I have heard from some parents that they are unsure if they may bring meds or forms into the school. We appreciate you being aware of our no non-vital visitors policy, but you absolutely may come to the front office and I am happy to meet you there so we can have what your student needs here at school. Let’s work together to keep our Blue Bears healthy and safe!
Best Regards,
Nurse Jamie Troup BSN, RN
Battle of the Books
Sign up now!
Mashburn Battle of the Books Team
2020-2021
*Registration is open September 8 – 18,2020 to all 3rd, 4th, or 5thgraders (face-to-face and/or virtual).
Please fill out this form if you are interested in being on the Battle team this year.
The cost is $15 for the year to join. Battle of the Books registration is open on My Payments Plus until September 18, 2020. Each student that registers will receive a Battle of the Books MES t-shirt. Students read books from their respective book lists from now until-April and come together (virtually for now) in teams of 4 to demonstrate their abilities, have FUN, and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The BOTB school competitions will take place in early May and the top team in each level (3-5) will move onto the county competition. Students that join a BOTB team should commit to reading at least 20 books from the list.
Our aim is to support students in their love and discovery for reading by introducing them to quality literature, to offer books that build upon historical values and the dignity of life, and to develop friendships between students based upon socialization, competition, and mutual respect.
*Books encourage students to learn new skills, explore new worlds, build new ideas, and change the world. Yet every child has different needs.
*2020-2021 We will begin the year with virtual meetings, which will be held at a time to be determined, via Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. We will play games and have book trivia during our meetings. The meetings will be recorded for students to view at their convenience. You may have a parent or older sibling act as a "BOTB coach" and assist students with keeping up with their book charts, listen to audiobooks and discuss characters and events, make it F-U-N! There are some GREAT books on our list! We hope to go back to Face to Face meetings as the year progresses but until then...please register, print your reading list, and start reading.
I registered my child....now what?
Check out a book on the list and R-E-A-D...like a hero!
Our first meeting will be in September. I will email everyone the week after fall break in September.
Check out the book list for your grade level. Our school library has copies of each book title. Virtual students may use the public library to check out paper copies and/or ebooks. We will discuss details at our first meeting.
Thanks so much!!

Reading Warriors
1SM has partnered with community members to implement our Reading Warriors program for a second year! The idea behind this program is to get as many books in students’ hands as possible and to help build students’ at home libraries. Each student has a Reading Warrior who has committed to purchasing a book for their reader each month. This week, 1SM met their Reading Warriors for the year! We are so excited for our first grade reading journey… it takes a village and we are so GRATEFUL for ours in 1SM!

Fourth Grade Reading Stamina
Fourth grade has been working on our READING STAMINA! Our goal in class is to read for 30 consecutive minutes while being fully engaged! An engaged reader is someone who chooses a book they are going to enjoy, stays focused on text, doesn’t move around and distract others, and thinks about what they are reading as they are reading! Each class created an anchor chart with songs, cartoon characters, or even Disney sayings to keep us motivated to be our best reading self.
