Units of Study

Math: We are beginning a new unit about computing with whole numbers. Our first topic will be addition. Students will be learning a variety of addition strategies to include in their mental math toolboxes. We will be adding numbers to the hundred thousands place, rounding, and reviewing place value concepts.

Reading: We are in the midst of a novel study of the book Soft Rain by Cornelia Cornelissen. This book fits in nicely with our study of Native Americans in social studies, as it is a historical fiction book about the Trail of Tears. Also, there is no December home reading log. Beginning in January, students will be starting a book challenge! Look for more information to come home after the break.

Writing: We are taking a "break" from our narrative unit this week to focus on country research for our upcoming cultural fair. Students will be conducting research about the countries of Panama (Threatt's homeroom class) and Peru (Reiking's homeroom class). Next week, we will continue publishing our personal narrative stories using the chrome books. When we return from winter break, we will be starting a brand new unit.

Word Study: Since word study is a component of our writing curriculum and we are taking a break from our usual writing block this week to focus on country research, we will not have word study activities this week. Also, there will be NO word study homework due this week. Students will turn in their word study homework and take their word study test next week. This is our FINAL week of word study for the year. When we return from Winter break, we will be starting weekly vocabulary. Look for more information to come home after the break.
