Model United Nations
The Model United Nations Club is deep into preparations for our second conference of the year! Model UN is a unique extracurricular organization where students learn and develop skills in research, writing, public speaking, and collaboration. Students take on the role of a delegate in the United Nations representing one of the hundreds of member states. After researching their nation, the students learn the parliamentary procedures required for debate at the UN, and prepare written position papers laying out their solutions to international issues. All of this is preparation for the conferences, where Dracut students debate and collaborate with students from across New England. The club is open to students of all grades and meets Thursdays after school throughout the school year. The club advisors are Ms. Velella and Ms. Snively.
This year, students attended a conference at Northeastern University facilitated by the United Nations Association of Greater Boston on Saturday November 18th. They researched to become experts on nations like Turkey, Chile, Yemen, and the Philippines. Then our students worked with their peers to find solutions for promoting sustainable energy for all, eliminating childhood poverty, and controlling disease outbreaks during humanitarian emergencies. Now our students are in preparation for their second conference at Bentley University on March 3rd. Representing countries like Kenya, Mexico, Iraq, and France, our RMS students are preparing for spirited debates on improving the sustainability of fast fashion, curbing the online drug market, and preventing ethnic conflicts.
