Mrs. Hladun's Tidings
Many of you know that I have two boys of my own - ages 9 (3rd gr) and 14 (9th gr). Video games, YouTube, Google and cell phones are mainstays in my home, probably much like they are in yours. I'm guessing that as a parent, you think about the impact of technology on your children. I'm always weighing the pros and cons as I try to raise happy and well adjusted children who are ready for the 21st century but also know how have a conversation with someone.
There are many games that seem kid 'friendly' but I challenge you to look below the surface - play the game before you let your kids play. Maybe it is okay! But maybe you'll find that they actually get the 'fun stuff' after engaging in game violence that makes you uncomfortable or they may be chatting with unknown people via text or voice as a function of the game. In the last couple of weeks, my eyes have been opened up to the variety of online 'challenges' and internet 'pranks' embedded in digital content aimed at kids - as adults, we can ascertain real from a hoax, but our children may not be as savvy. I wonder 'who does stuff like this?!?!' when I hear about Colts who aren't sleeping for fear of Momo or who are talking about stalkers in our chromebooks.
Certainly, you get to chose how your children spend their free time, but we ask that you are aware of what they are spending their time on. Particularly in the last year or so, our staff has noticed that children are more likely to write about their favorite video game instead of their favorite outside game or family experience. Also (although this may not be connected to gaming), children report more anxiety, we see less focus in class, and the things that are considered "cool" are often inspired by video games or 'you tubers' (case in point - fortnight dances were a hit in StarStruck last week!). Here are a couple of articles that may be worth a read if you (like me) wonder about the impact of gaming on our children:
