ConVal High School Happenings - October 15, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
It is hard to believe we are halfway through October. We were grateful for the warm temperatures this week which enabled many students to spend some extra time outside.
We have many exciting things happening on campus next week. Please make sure to read about the TASC Talk opportunities, and don't forget to consider purchasing a ticket to the performance of Infinite Black Suitcase. I certainly look forward to attending!
This week, many of our senior student athletes participated in their respective senior night games. Next week will feature several more senior games. Thank you to our seniors for representing ConVal athletics and for your commitment to team and sportsmanship.
I would like to invite our entire ConVal community to join us on Sunday, October 24 at 10:30 am for a community service opportunity. We plan to clean a stretch of the highway near the high school. This is open to students and families! Please see more below on how to sign up and what you may want to bring.
I would encourage you to read through this newsletter to learn more about class fundraisers, the Community Walk for Recovery this Sunday, and our current active "Shoe Us The Love" shoe drive.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Heather

School Counseling
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) includes 6 mindsets (standards). School Counselors encourage these mindsets for all students. This week we will highlight Mindset M.2, which is the “sense of acceptance, respect, support and inclusion for self and others in the school environment." Below are some suggestions for things that parents/families might consider about their child(ren) related to this topic suggested by https://www.schoolcounselor.org/:
- Think about your child’s level of self-confidence when faced with a new task.
- Describe your child’s approach to demonstrating acceptance and inclusion for all within the school environment.
Next week we will share information about another ASCA Mindset - M 3: Positive attitude toward work and learning.
Personal Fitness Class
Mrs. Lima’s Personal Fitness class has been taking advantage of the good weather and strength training outdoors. Every day the students warm up and cool down by moving their equipment to and from their classroom tent. On Tuesday, each student paired up with a classmate who lifts the same amount of weight. The pairs completed three rounds of an upper body free weight circuit using barbells, dumbbells, and weight benches.
TASK Talk Opportunities
- On Wednesday, October 20, Project Steno presenters Nancy Varallo and Camille Palladino-Duffy will introduce students to the high-paying career as a court stenographer. The event will take place in the LHT. Interested students can sign up in TASC and may participate in free classes here at ConVal.
- On Thursday, October 21, there will be a Lab Girls Informational Meeting with Susie Spikol from the Harrs Center as a guest speaker. This is a STEM-related event in the LHT during TASC. Interested students will find out how high school girls can act as role models and mentors for middle school science students.
Students should ask on Monday to be scheduled by their TASC homeroom mentor to either of these events. They will appear as "TASC TALK" under the respective sponsors (Jen Kiley for Project Steno and Andria Johnson for Lab Girls)
