45 DAY Goal focus: Condition and Core Reflection
Student-centered classrooms are key to empowering students. By creating opportunities for self-directed learning, using student discourse as formative assessment, and explicitly teaching academic vocabulary, we can help students take control of their education, achieve content mastery, and unlock their full potential.
Create Opportunities for Self-Directed Learning
What is it?
Students feel engaged and empowered when they have agency over the content, pace and method of their learning. Practice with self-directed learning can also help target many of the skills that are important for self-regulation, autonomy, and motivation.
Try This:
Mix whole group, small group and individual instruction provides opportunities to experiment with self-directed learning. Students can access content at their own pace and show their progress through formative assessment information.
Use Student Discourse as Formative Assessment
What is it?
There are elements of higher order thinking that only reveals itself through conversation. It may look like students ask why, how and what if questions or working in pairs or groups to build on one another knowledge bases.
Try This:
Create opportunities for student discourse around grade level topics early and often. By setting active and complex engagement as the goals of these activities, you can generate important insights that help focus your attention on getting all students in your class to the level of discourse quickly.
Explicit teach academic vocabulary
What is it?
Direct instruction of subject specific vocabulary provides important background knowledge to help students access grade-level content. The benefit extends beyond the words themselves to strategies that helps students learn new words such as determining roots or using a dictionary.
Try This:
Provide opportunities for students to learn new vocabulary and vocabulary strategies. Low on Time? Use instructional practices such as vocabogram, which combines multiple skills and strategies into a single activity, maximizing whole group instructional time.
