Two Important Celebrations on Saturday, Oct. 4

Both Yom Kippur (Jewish celebration) and Eid-al-Adha (Muslim Holy Day) are celebrated on Oct. 4. Please take a moment to learn a bit more about each.

Specials on Half-Days

When we have half-day PD, there are no specials in the AM. Related Arts teachers are encouraged to push-in to classrooms to work with classroom teachers on special projects and learning. Both Related Arts and classroom teachers are expected to teach from 8:45-12:01 without specials. This is something that has been decided by the district and went to Discussion.

Thank you for following district procedures on this one.

Communication Expectations

At our recent Elementary Principals' meeting, we talked about expectations for communicating with parents. This conversation started by way of the topic of Blackboard and how much elementary teachers are expected to use it.

End result: It is really important that you have some way of communicating with parents. Be it a newsletter through Smore, a blog you and your students regularly contribute to, Shutterfly for photos, Twitter, or emailing a newsletter and other information, please make sure you are communicating regularly with parents.

Some parents are used to using Blackboard because they have older students. It might be a nice idea to post something on your Blackboard page that say how you communicate with parents and include a link if you can. Then you can continue to communicate via other methods.

Questions? Please ask.

District Commitment to Diversity

At a recent District Diversity Committee meeting that includes parents, three statements were articulated and committed to. Here they are. Let's see what we can do to make sure we are working at being highly effective with each of these commitments.

  1. I can pronounce the preferred first names of all of my students.
  2. I know the special holidays, traditions, and customs that are valued by the families of my students.
  3. I have positive representations of other cultures in my classroom, especially reflecting the makeup of my students.

Our Diversity Goal

As we continue to find ways to be more inclusive and welcoming, we also need to honor the celebrations our families observe. I know some of you specifically asked families what holidays or celebrations are commemorated. That's great. If we don't ask, it's pretty hard to know.

I'd like to challenge us to learn more about how our families celebrate special days. As different holiday times near, let's see if we can help them honor those days as a way of showing our commitment to kindness and welcome.
