Educating Children of Color Summit
The district was well represented at the 2019 Educating Children of Color (ECOC) Summit this month. We had three students from Widefield High School and seven students from Mesa Ridge High School participate in the ECOC High School Student Ambassador Program. The students trained during advisory hours and after school to prepare for the summit. The students did a amazing job coordinating and assisting the summit speakers and presenters. Three of the ten ambassadors won new laptops! Shout out to Carlos Gonzalez for helping to train our students and organize this amazing opportunity.

FIRST Technical Challenge
Widefield School District 3 hosted the FIRST Technical Challenge on Saturday at Widefield High School. We had several D3 teams competing against schools in the Pikes Peak and Front Range regions. In order to compete in this competition, students had to create a robot to perform a number of tasks for points within a five month period. These teams worked tirelessly to program and build robots, and then document their journey in an engineering notebook. These teams did an amazing job demonstrating perseverance, collaboration, and gracious professionalism. Everyone did a great job! Congrats to all the students, staff, volunteers and parents who helped make this a successful event!
Poetry Cafe
Each student sat under the spotlight and read his or her original poem to the class. Classmates gave positive feedback about each poem and commented on the type of poem read. In honor of true Poetry Cafe, students snapped their fingers to show appreciation for each poet. Shout out to Carla Borck's class for doing an amazing job!
Widefileld of Dreams ~ Maddy Cowell
Last year, she won four medals with her competitive cheer team in Kansas, including 1st Place in the US Finals, and was named team captain for showing exceptional leadership skills. New to Colorado, Maddy is looking to join a local cheer team and continue her passion for doing jumps, backhand springs, and twists. In her spare time, Maddy choreographs her own cheer and gymnastics routine that she is saving for competitions. Maddy is also an excellent student who enjoys all subjects, especially P.E. where she can practice her skills. Maddy's dream is to become a professional cheerleader competing with the Great White Sharks of Canada and to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics doing the floor, bars, and balance beam events.
