GRE Family Gazette
September 16, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
I hope you had a wonderful Fair Day today! We have been busy here at school filling our professional toolboxes. Today we took a close look at our classroom instruction for Reading and Writing. We had a wonderful day digging in and taking time to learn best practices in the classroom.
This week we have our first round of Parent Teacher Conferences. Your child's teacher should have contacted you if you are scheduled for this first round of conferences. There are two other opportunities this Fall. If you would like to help our PTO sponsor dinner for staff, please click here to sign up.
Here's to a great week!

When: Monday, September 30 at 6:00 pm2. GRE’s Art Day will be on Friday November 8th instead of in the spring! We are looking to bring some new artists to GRE to work with our students and looking for any connections you may have in our community! On Art Day students have the opportunity to work with both a VISUAL artist to make something and a PERFORMING artist to learn how to do something.
If you are an artist or you have any connections to a visual or performing artist who you think would be interested, PLEASE share them through this GRE Art Day- Artist Connections link!
3. As we continue to learn about Schoology we identified that notifications will be easier to view if we push out our information in a group. Therefore, each school has created a family group. Click here to see all building's group codes and to learn about to join a Schoology Group. You can join GRE's family group with the code: N5VZ-VWQC-W7VVZ.
*A quick troubleshooting tip! If you are getting an error when logging into the Schoology app try this! When logging in with the app, instead of selecting GRE as the school, select Big Walnut Local Schools, then login with your information.
Special Spotlight: STEM with Mrs. Keller
Hello! My name is Angie Keller and I am the STEM teacher. This is my 16th year of teaching and my 4th year teaching STEM. I currently reside in Westerville with my fur baby Remy!
The STEM Hub is always in need of items. Right now we need plastic bags. If you have any to donate, please feel free to send them in with your child.
Students have already been hard at work learning about or reviewing growth mindset, 20th century skills, and setting goals for the year.
Kindergarten has been learning about growth mindset and the power of yet. They are exploring different stations and working on communicating and collaborating.
First Grade is starting their first design challenge. Pixar called and would like a new character designed for Toy Story 5. Since the character Forky was so popular, they would like students to design a new and improved Forky. We read the book Those Darn Squirrels to introduce the design process and students have started imagining and planning what the new character will look like and how they will create it.
Second grade just wrapped up team building challenges and are starting their first design challenge. We read the book WHOOSH!, which is about an engineer who designs different products, including the Super Soaker Squirt Gun. Students will take an interest survey that will relate their interests to different careers. Students will then choose a project based on their interests.
Third Grade just wrapped up team building challenges and are starting their first design challenge. Students listened to the story One Plastic Bag, which is based on a true story about women in Gambia who recycles plastic bags by turning them into purses. Students are in the process of researching different items they could make using bags. They will then select one item and create it.
Fourth Grade just wrapped up team building challenges and are exploring with Makey-Makey. They are creating interactive pianos right now.
Congrats to our Golden Spatula Winners!
This week we introduced the "Golden Spatula Award" at lunch time. This prize is awarded to one class at each grade level. Throughout the week, we look for students who are following our lunch room expectations. It was awesome to see the kids get so excited-please help us congratulate our winners for the week of September 9th.
