Principal's Message
This Week at GRE!
Veterans Day is a day of learning, celebration, and appreciation. Students learned what Veterans Day really is about. We spent the week learning and celebrating veterans and we culminated the week with an assembly (see below). There are so many thank you to those that made the celebration and learning about Veterans Day possible.
First, thank you to the men and women who served in our military, past and present. Thank you for your service and dedication to our country and our freedom. Second, thank you to the families of our military. We recognize the sacrifice that it takes to be a military family. The care and support you provide does not go unnoticed.
Thank you to the Veterans Day planning committee, especially the related arts team, for their thoughtful organization of assembly and events. Thank you to the students involved today. The children are one of the reasons we feel so strongly about protecting and strengthening our country. Thank you to the PTO, who provided funding and helped with the coffee and donuts. Thank you also to the student leaders who made signs and planned operation kids for troops, which sends supplies to troops overseas. Thank you to the whole staff for making cards for active troops and for educating students about Veterans Day.
There are specific individuals that deserve to be recognized as well. Thank you to Miss Scarpa who facilitated the creation of the student artwork on display. Thank you to our flag bearers and Pledge of Allegiance leaders, Evelyn, Sophia and Quinn and Mr. Preston. Thank you to our National Anthem singer, Vivienne. Thank you to the 3rd grade performers under the direction of Miss Borden. Thank you to our student speakers: Lilly, Noa, Calista, Quinn and Jensen. Thank you to our guest speakers, Douglas Schultz and Michael Minor. A very special thank you to Angela Gould, who spearheaded this community-wide initiative and has a special place in her heart for active military and veterans.
Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that Saturday is World Kindness Day! Take a look at this resource from On Our Sleeves from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I recently asked my daughter what kindness and empathy means. Her response was, “To treat others the way I would want to be treated.” I grew up thinking that too. That certainly is kind. However, that response lacks empathy. True empathy is understanding how SOMEONE ELSE is feeling and treating them the way THEY want to be treated. Our world is filled with I, me, and my right now. Truly listening and trying to understand someone else’s perspective is true kindness and empathy. Disclaimer, kindness, empathy, and listening doesn’t necessarily mean agreeing with them. However, it does mean understanding them.
Have a kind, empathetic, and appreciative weekend!
Sincerely,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal

GRE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Veterans Day
Glacier Ridge Elementary celebrated Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11. Veterans and their GRE student family member(s) joined together for a short assembly in the gym, where veterans were honored and recognized. You can view the recording HERE. This event was a true collaborative effort of the entire school community. Every staff member and student had a hand in the success of the event. Students wrote cards to veterans, made artwork, and hand painted gifts for our veterans. Our apologies for any poor audio or video quality.

Colder Weather is Here
It’s getting cold outside! GRE students LOVE going out for recess. We want them to stay safe and healthy. Please make sure your child leaves for school with outerwear appropriate for the day’s weather. Make a habit of checking the weather forecast and encouraging your child to wear a coat, hat, scarf and gloves on these colder days. Students are welcome to wear shorts while inside, but they MUST wear pants over them for recess during cold temperatures. Students must also bring out a jacket that is appropriate for the temperature.
20 degrees or below with wind chill - all recesses will be indoors
21-25 degrees with wind chill - lunch recess will be indoors, short recess will be outdoors
26 degrees with wind chill and warmer - all recesses will be outdoors
Lastly, it is a good reminder to put your child's name in their respective winter attire. A simple task of putting names in coats and on sweatshirts helps get them back to their owner.
