Teenagers in the 1940's
What if you were a teenager in the 1940's?
Conformity
This is an example of a club at New Trier which shows conformity because they are all wearing the exact same outfits and they had the same hair. Back then, all girls used to have curly hair. A specific gender during this time was supposed to look the same way as everyone else.
Family
This photo portreys a typical family back in the 1940's. The girl helps with cleaning and cooking and has less time for homework then the boy, which is not particularly fair. The boy gets his homework and studies more then the girl, which was common back then. This also shows the different roles in a family. Boys back then were supposed to be smarter then women, but women were supposed to do chores and be a house mom.
Success
As many know, cigarettes were very popular back in the 1940's. Advertisments show that smoking was healthy and it was part of an everyday life style. This is how cigarettes became so successful in the 1940's, but as time went on we started to find research that smoking is bad for the body. This made less people smoke. But based on this ad, we can tell teens most likely smoked, but now not a lot of teens do.
Thesis
Overall, life as a teen in the 1940's was harsh due to social expectation.
