Congratulations to all of our Year 8 learners on their exhibition work and presentations last week. Well done also to our Year 7 learners in their inquiries.

Thanks for joining in last week at our evening event and supporting your child through the process. A huge thanks to all of our staff for their amazing hard work and facilitation. Please take a look at our Exhibition Video in this newsletter.

We have now started the postponed round of Education Outside of the Classroom (EOTC). A fantastic programme has been planned that includes water activities on Lake Pupuke, SurfIng at Orewa and archery, climbing wall and team building at school. Our teams are really looking forward to participating in this. Thanks to all of our parent helpers!

It is great to have a number of our teams competing in recent events, with a number of them coming first, often progressing to the next level. Congratulations to you all!

We are looking forward to our 50th Jubilee Celebration in a few weeks time. There will be a small memorabilia section open in the library from 9 - 17 November for our learners and community to view.

Wellbeing Leaders

Hi everyone! Each week at TNIS we share a weekly focus with our TNIS learners, and we would like to get you onboard as well. Every fortnight we will share our weekly focus with you. Next week’s focus is: Give - Tukua. This is because we would like our TNIS community to give encouragement, support and time to our learners during Athletics day. We are also encouraging our learners to show the “TNIS Way” and give - tukua during this week. Thank you from your Wellbeing Leaders, Eshana and Benedict.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Our TNIS PYP Exhibition has been one of many challenges and new learning for our Year 8 learners. They have overcome the challenge of lockdowns and not being able to visit community contacts by using Zoom and phone calls. Throughout the school holidays, a large number of Year 8s took action in the community, showing their dedication and enthusiasm towards the Exhibition and their interests. Some of the actions taken over the past few weeks were:

• Holding workshops teaching other learners how to make sustainable products such as beeswax wraps
• Setting up signs on wharfs reminding people how to fish sustainably
• Collecting supplies and donating them to a range of community charities, including Auckland City Mission and the Salvation Army
• Creating video lesson plans on different PE skills for primary schools to help enhance wellbeing for young children
• Creation of picture books that explain gender stereotypes and how to overcome them
• Taking VR sets to Wilson School to show their learners different experiences

We are very proud of what our learners have achieved, and they now have a sense of what true action looks like.

Looking ahead, our next Unit of Inquiry is How We Express Ourselves. The Central Idea is, "Celebrations and traditions create ways for people to express important beliefs." The learners will be inquiring into their own cultures and belief systems, as well as that of others. We will be finishing the unit with a Cultural Celebration Day, with each learner participating in a way that is important to them.

This will be a great way to finish off the year!

Exhibition 2020

Lit Quiz Winners

Three teams competed in the 2020 Kids Lit Quiz competition on Friday 16 October.

Team 1: Matz, Hannah, Aaaron and Bariyah.

Team 2: Cocoa,Ruby, Preston and Fateh.

Team 3: Mia, Alexander and David.

Team's 2 and 3 competed in the morning competition and Team 1 in the afternoon.

Team 2 came 10th in the morning session, and David G from Team 3 won the TNIS individual competition.

Team 1 was the winner of the afternoon competition so they are now off to Wellington with their coaches (Mrs Oliver and Mrs Buller) to compete in the National Competition on Sunday 16th November.

Mathex Winners

Congratulations TNIS Mathex teams. Year 8 Team 1 achieved 3rd place and Year 7 Team 1 achieved 1st place at the North Shore Mathex Competition this year! Our learners' commitment to attending weekly lunchtime meetings and their collaboration and thinking skills have led to outstanding results. Well done all TNIS Mathex teams for proudly representing TNIS at the competition. We look forward to hearing more good news at the Auckland Casio Mathex coming up this week.

Girls Basketball Winners

The TNIS Sparks attended the Basketball Zone day on Monday. They enjoyed been back on the court and showed some excellent teamwork and individual skills.

With 4 wins from 4 games, they headed into the final v MBIS.

The final was a fantastic close game that the girls held on to win 12-11 in the end.

Girls Volleyball Winners

On Tuesday last week, the TNIS Girls Volleyball teams played at North Harbour Stadium. After 6 gruelling games, one TNIS team emerged undefeated taking the North Harbour Title. Our other team played amazingly well, narrowly missing out on an all TNIS final.

Athletics Day 2020

TNIS will be holding our Whole School Athletics Day on Tuesday 3 November. Held at the Takapuna Athletics Club, events will run from 9:30am - 2:15pm. Parents, caregivers and whānau are warmly invited to come and watch. Please see the timetable below for more information.

All learners are required to participate in athletics either as competitive or non-competitive. If your child is unable to participate due to injury or sickness, please email their classroom teacher.

Head Lice

We have already had several notifications about cases of head lice at TNIS. Any learner who has their hair shoulder-length or longer must tie their hair up in a ponytail please. This helps to prevent the spread of headlice.

School Expectations

Thank you for helping us to ensure that all learners meet our expectations at TNIS.

• Just a reminder, please, that formal school shoes must be completely black, but can have a white sole.

• Learners who feel the cold can wear a thermal layer under their school shirt, as long as it cannot be seen. This means that if they want to wear a long-sleeved thermal, they must have their sweatshirt on as well so that the thermal top is not visible

• Learners can wear their TNIS jacket all day (except at Specialisation for safety reasons). Learners can wear a mufti jacket to and from school, but not during class time or at break times.
