Mooresville MS Family Newsletter
January 18, 2019
A Message from Mrs. Robinson
Greetings Mooresville Middle School Families:
The 2019 Red Imps are an amazing bunch and we are so fortunate to have each of you as part of our MMS Family!
As we enter into a new semester we are taking time to remind students to give their best effort at all times. For semester 2, students core classes (math, ELA, science, and social studies) will remain the same, they will be assigned two new elective classes. These classes were listed on schedules at the start of the year but we will take time to remind students which classes they are assigned.
If you would like to schedule a mid-year parent meeting with a teacher please call the school and ask to speak to the teacher or send the teacher an email. We try to meet as a team so if you schedule with one teacher we will invite all of your child’s teachers to the meeting.
Attendance is very important! Please encourage your middle school student to be on time and at school every day. Students who miss more than 12 days of school for any reason will be invited to make up the missed time during the summer.
If you are interested in seeing a day in the life of a middle school student please join our next parent tour. The next MMS Parent Tour will be Tuesday, February 12th at 8am. To reserve your spot please call the front office at 704-658-2720.
If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to give me a call. It’s ALWAYS a great day to be a Red Imp!!!!
Sincerely,
Ayana Robison

National Academy Foundation Academy of Engineering
Mooresville High School will begin a National Academy Foundation (NAF) Academy of Engineering during the 2019-2020 school year. A maximum of seventy-five freshmen will be accepted into the academy. This academy will only be offered to freshmen and they will be cohorted with their group in two classes per year. These will be their English and Engineering classes. During their senior year, students will be provided the opportunity to participate in a paid internship with one of our local businesses. Upon graduation, the students will be NAFTrack certified. NAFTrack Certification helps students:
Make the connection between their high school coursework and their futures
Reflect on their own learning in order to set goals for continuous improvement
Gain proficiency in taking online assessments, which are becoming more prevalent in higher education
Demonstrate the hard and soft skills they develop throughout their academy experience
Get on track to NAFTrack Certified Hiring, a commitment made by top companies to give special consideration to NAFTrack certified job applicants
If you have questions, feel free to email Julie Blocker, jblocker@mgsd.k12.nc.us, or visit the NAF.org website to learn more about NAF academies.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CLASSES AT MMS
8 ELA
Moving into third quarter all classes will begin new novels. Honors will be reading Summer of My German Soldier. Ketchie and Cilley will begin Discovering Wes Moore. Davis-Vickery will begin Outsiders, while Blanton will begin working on poetry and Tears of a Tiger.
8 Social Studies
We will start 3rd quarter by examining the Antebellum period in the United States.
8 Math
Students in 8th Grade Math have started our study of Statistics. Students are learning about Scatter Plots and the relationship between data sets. Students are also finding the line of best fit for data to make predictions. After Benchmarks, students will be working on a College Project to display their knowledge of Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit.
Math 1 students have been studying Quadratics. Students have learned about the parts of a quadratic and what they represent in applications. After the unit test, students will review for the Benchmarks and complete their Big Business Projects.
7 Science
To finish up our 2nd quarter, we are completing our study of body systems and how they work together to keep us healthy. Homeostasis is those systems keeping the body in balance.
We will start 3rd quarter with one of our most awaited activities- frog dissection! We then roll right into genetics and heredity. Punnett squares and pedigrees are always fun to learn.

7 General Music
During the last few weeks, general music wound down our semester with units on Broadway Musicals and Video Game music. Students created their own Broadway shows from the storyline, to the costumes, to the songs, and the results were nothing short of entertaining! Afterwards, they got the opportunity to share some of their favorite video games with the class as we explored music in video games (Fortnite, of course, was the class favorite). After researching compositional aspects of composing and how this industry has grown, students got the chance to try and code their own short animation and create an overview of an objective for their game.
It was a pleasure working with this group of students this semester, as I have seen some really imaginative ideas come to life through their hands-on projects.
Chorus and Theater Arts
- Theatre Arts used the last week to perform for parents and teachers.
- Chorus students created group song videos and reviewed solfege in stations.
- All students reflected on their semester in a performing arts class and celebrated by playing a few improvisational games.

Business Education
7th Grade Business Education classes just completed their personal finance unit (budgets, home and car purchases, writing checks and balancing their accounts). They ended the 9 weeks with a food truck project. Students created a Food Truck, menu, uniform, business card, advertisement and a logo and slogan for their truck. They had lots of very creative food trucks.
8th Grade Business Education classes finished a personal finance unit where they have found a job, created a budget and paid monthly bills. They have designed and figured out the cost of building a home and purchased a vehicle. Students also learned about the stock market and invested money in stocks. They have checked their stocks each day and bought and sold stocks trying to make a profit.

8 General Music
8th Grade General Music is currently finishing up their Broadway portion of their curriculum with an assignment on Into the Woods. We're watching the Disney production from 2014 of the musical, and students have notes they're going through to help facilitate them understanding the plot points and songs throughout the production. Lastly, we'll be going over music in our movies, and how music shapes the emotions and feel of certain movie scenes. We will also touch on being a Foley Artist, which are the people who create all of the sounds and the overall sound design of movies.
