Trauma Interventions in Schools
Yoga Tuesdays
May 23, 2019 by Sasha Jones As more schools aim to address students’ social and emotional needs, some are using meditation, yoga, and other mindfulness practices to address misbehavior and stress. But the research on the effectiveness of such practices is mixed.
Restroom Monitors
Please be sure to have bathroom monitors in place when taking classes to the restroom. Also, do not send students to the restroom without supervision to avoid students soiling the seats, walls, or floor. Please address this with them, and check behind your class as they leave the restroom. Stress to students that this behavior is unacceptable and unsanitary. Our custodians should not have to deal with this type of behavior.
DISCIPLINE REFERRALS
Please remember that you CANNOT send a student to the referral office. It is a safety concern when students are sent to the referral room alone. You must turn in the behavior expectation log to Ms. Adelowo and put the referral in TAC. Someone will come get the student as soon as we are able. If it is an immediate concern, please call or text. If you are unable to reach someone in the referral room, please call the Main Office so an administrator can be notified.

Duty Supervision and Transitions
Also, when you have morning duty, please meet cafeteria staff outside the cafeteria to receive students instead of waiting on students to be brought to you. It helps ease the burden of transitioning from the cafeteria when duty staff are ready and available as students are leaving the cafeteria.

Operations
Classroom Care: Please document classroom cleaning concerns in the book in the office. Have students clean around their area before dismissal.
Restrooms: Remind students of proper restroom care (flushing, no tissue on the floor, one paper towel, turning water off, and etc.). Do not let students go to the restroom alone. A bathroom monitor would be great for ensuring that the restrooms stay clean.
Substitute Folders
All teachers are expected to maintain a RED FOLDER on your desk throughout the year. This will be an emergency lesson plan folder that will be used in the event that you cannot get lesson plans here by 7:30. The RED FOLDERS should be used in emergencies only. Within this folder there should be a scripted lesson, which anyone could easily follow, for each subject you teach. Also, include the following:
class list
daily schedule including special class times and the time you and your partner teacher switch, as well as dismissal times
scheduled bathroom breaks
recess
lunch time
duty assignments (afternoon)
drill procedures
transportation list that shows how your students get home
list of students that check in with the nurse at designated times
times students are pulled from the regular classroom for interventions, special education services or speech
Substitute Folders will be checked by a member of the Core Team this week. Please make sure all components are included.
Nurse's Corner
If you have a student in your classroom that has turned 11 years old, they are required to receive additional vaccine(s) unless they are otherwise exempt. Please remind parents to check their mail and student backpacks for letters regarding immunizations. Parents will need to call and make an appointment with their doctor or the health department and let the school nurse know once the appointment has been made. This only applies to students turning eleven years old, or students who are missing vaccinations.
A note went home with students informing parents that the school nurse or faculty member may use topical ointments such as but not limited to triple antibiotic ointment, orajel, and lip balm. Please remind students that a parent signature is required for treatment to be provided.
