An operating system is the core software that allows a computer, console to run as an useful device. It manages the hardware, the user interface and all other software running on a computer or a console.
Apple
iOS is a mobile operating system developed and distributed by Apple Inc. Originally unveiled in 2007 for the iPhone, it has been extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini and second-generation Apple TV.

It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions.
