New Graduation Plans Finalized

CCSD has announced the updated 2023 graduation schedule.

  • The Cedar Shoals ceremony is now scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 25, at Waters-Wilkins Stadium (CSHS football/soccer stadium), 1300 Cedar Shoals Dr., Athens.
  • The Clarke Central ceremony is now scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 26, at Billy Henderson Stadium (CCHS football/soccer stadium), 350 South Milledge Ave., Athens.
  • The Classic City High graduation ceremony remains scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, May 25, in the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall at the CCSD District Office, 595 Prince Ave., Athens.

Congratulations to Bethany Forrester, Gifted Program teacher at Alps Road Elementary, for being named CCSD's Employee of the Month for March!


Ms. Forrester is in her seventh year at Alps Road and with CCSD and is described by principal Dr. Melanie James as "a born leader and integral part of the Alps Road family." Ms. Forrester also serves as the chair of the school's Enrichment Committee, director of the school's Pathways to Success after-school enrichment program, director of the student leadership program, and a member of the Alps Road LSGT and School Improvement Leadership Team.


Ms. Forrester was surprised with the award this week by superintendent Dr. Robbie Hooker and CCSD staff, along with Alps Road administration, and was recognized at the Thursday, March 9 Clarke County Board of Education meeting.

Celebrating Read Across America Week

For the last week all across CCSD, schools have been celebrating Read Across America Week. The annual initiative, led by the National Education Association, celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday and aims to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits.


Events around the district included live readings with district staff and community members and other fun activities like storybook character parades.

Clarke Central Mock Trial Team Advances to State Finals

Congratulations to the Clarke Central High School Mock Trial Team, which finished second in the district competition last weekend and advanced to the state finals, set for March 18-19 in Gwinnett County!


The team completed three simulated trials over the course of 11 hours during the district competition and had four students win individual awards — Alice Adams (Outstanding Performance Award and Outstanding Attorney Award), Ella Cleland (Outstanding Performance Award), Riley David (Outstanding Witness Award), and Addisyn Huff (Outstanding Attorney Award). Other team members include Mariah Carson, Quinn Dowd, Kelli Floyd, Ava Gossett, Wilson Griffeth, Jessica Hudson, Ben Ness, Haley Rucker, Tavarus "Troy" Smith, Sekou Sesay, and Molly Suggs.

Student Journalist Publications Take Home Top Honors in Regional Competition

Congratulations to the Odyssey Media Group at Clarke Central High and BluePrints Magazine at Cedar Shoals High, which combined to win over 100 awards last weekend during the Southern Interscholastic Press Association annual convention in Columbia, South Carolina, continuing their streaks of dominance in the regional competition.


Clarke Central's Odyssey Media Group, Odyssey News Magazine, and iliad Literary-Art Magazine and Cedar Shoals' BluePrints all received "All-Southern" recognition, SIPA's highest evaluation rating.

Cedar Shoals Senior Frick, Clarke Central Juniors Clement, Shaikun Win Champion Journalist Honors from GSPA

Congratulations to Cedar Shoals High senior Melanie Frick, Co-Editor-in-Chief of BluePrints Magazine, for being named this week as the runner-up in the 2023 Georgia Scholastic Press Association Champion Journalist of the Year competition! The award is based on a comprehensive portfolio highlighting her work in various aspects of journalistic media and leadership. Melanie was named Georgia Junior Champion Journalist of the Year as a junior in 2022.


Also, Clarke Central High juniors Maya Clement and Anna Shaikun were named the 2023 GSPA Georgia Junior Champion Journalist winner and runner-up, respectively! Maya is the Managing Editor of the Odyssey Media Group, and Anna serves as the Odyssey Media Group's Digital Editor.

Congratulations to Clarke Central High senior Natalie Soper, who has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship finalist! Natalie was one of approximately 15,000 finalists selected out of an initial group of approximately 1.5 million across the U.S. Good luck to this Gladiator as she advances to the next round of competition!

Pair of Clarke Central JROTC Cadets Enlist in U.S. Navy

Congratulations to Clarke Central High JROTC cadets DeVonte’ Williams and Matthew Zavaleta for their recent enlistment in the United States Navy!


Devonte’ will pursue a career as an operations specialist, while Matthew is planning to either pursue a career in combat aviation or seek to become a Navy Seal.

LSGT Candidate Declaration Window Open!

The window for parents and teachers to declare their candidacy for their school's Local School Governance Team is now open.


During this time, individuals interested in serving a two-year term (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2025) can complete a Declaration of Candidacy Form. The declaration window will remain open until April 12, and voting will take place April 19-26.

Work-Based Learning Applications for 2023-24 Now Open!

The Clarke County Work-Based Learning Program is an educational option that uses academic and workplace learning related to a student’s career goal to aid in the transition to the workforce and postsecondary education. The instruction and learning at school, at the work site, and through independent projects further enhance the personal, professional, and career development of the student.


Here are the admission requirements for students:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older, entering 11th or 12th grade, and on track for graduation
  • Must have previously taken or be concurrently enrolled in a CTAE course
  • Must have three recommendations (two current teachers and your counselor)
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Disciplinary and/or excessive absences may result in a student not being admitted.

CCSD Young Scientist Fair Set for March 25

CCSD will host its 2023 Young Scientist Fair on Saturday, March 25, at Alps Road Elementary, 205 Alps Rd., starting at 8:30 a.m.


The event will include displays and judging of K-5 entries in the Elementary Science Fair, Elementary Science Art Exhibit, and Clarke Invents competition as well as several other hands-on educational activities for students in grades K-5. The full schedule of events can be found in the image and PDF link below.


In order to compete in the K-5 Science Fair, Art Exhibit, or Clarke Invents competitions, projects must be dropped off at Alps Road Elementary between 4-6 p.m. on Friday, March 24. The registration form to compete can be found here and is due by Friday, March 17.

ACCA Invites Businesses, Community to Participate in Mock Interview Event

The Athens Community Career Academy is reaching out to Athens-area businesses and community members that have engaged with the academy and the district’s Work-Based Learning Program in the past for volunteers to support the academy’s annual mock interview event on Wednesday, March 29.


The event is in keeping with academy's mission to prepare CCSD students with the skills necessary to meet local and regional workforce needs and help them achieve their post-secondary goals. In addition to academic and technical skills, ACCA is dedicated to ensuring that students have the employability and social skills needed to be successful after high school.

Books for Keeps, CCSD Announce T-Shirt Art Contest for K-8 Students

CCSD is partnering with local nonprofit Books for Keeps on an art contest fundraiser to aid Books for Keeps in continuing to deliver books to all CCSD students.


Students in grades K-8 are asked to help design a T-shirt that will be sold to raise money for this goal. The winner will have their artwork featured on the T-shirt and more!


The contest opened today (Friday, Feb. 24), and submissions are due Wednesday, March 15. The winner will be announced Friday, March 24.

Scenes from 'Bridging the Gap' Event at Pinewood Estates

It was a great day Saturday, March 4, at Pinewood Estates, as the Office of Family and Community Engagement hosted another "Bridging the Gap" community event! CCSD staff were on hand to hear from residents, answer questions, and offer support in several areas. A special shout-out to the Clarke Central High football players who distributed food boxes, snacks, and more provided by City of Refuge Athens to families!

Clarke County Schools Educator Career Fair Set for March 25

CCSD will host an Educator Career Fair on Saturday, March 25, for all educators interested in joining our team! The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the District Office, 595 Prince Ave., Athens.


Our Educator Career Fair is the perfect opportunity to speak with many of our current teachers and principals to hear more in detail about their schools and the positions they are hiring for. At the event, you may be invited to interview with school teams and potentially offered a teaching position on the spot! CCSD Human Resources representatives will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

'Youth Pow Wow' Event Postponed

The Athens Area Human Relations Council has postponed its "Youth Pow Wow" event, which had been scheduled for Saturday, March 11, at Clarke Central High. CCSD will share updated information from AAHRC as it becomes available.

10th Annual Chess and Community Conference Set for March 18

Athens nonprofit Chess and Community will host its 10th annual conference on Saturday, March 18, starting at 9 a.m., at the Classic Center, 300 North Thomas St., Athens.


Clarke Central High principal Dr. Swade Huff and Cedar Shoals High principal Antonio Derricotte will open the conference to discuss their vision for their schools. Former University of Georgia football player Mohammad Massaquoi is the keynote speaker. The conference will also include:

  • a youth chess tournament between schools
  • a chess match between children and representatives from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and Clarke County Sheriff's Office
  • a robotics, coding, and chess tournament between students from across Athens and other parts of Georgia
  • four local high school students receiving the Think Before You Move Scholarship
  • chess games in virtual reality.

Athens Peer Court Now Accepting Youth Volunteers

Athens Peer Court, a partnership between the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia and the Athens-Clarke County Juvenile Court, is now accepting youth volunteers.


The program is free and open to all Clarke County students, grades 8-12. As part of the program, youth volunteers serve as the lawyers, judge, and jury in sentencing hearings for fellow youth who have been charged with misdemeanor offenses. These youth volunteers receive training on leadership skills, public speaking, and how restorative justice promotes behavioral change and reduces recidivism.


All volunteers are required to attend the following two training sessions:

  • Thursday, March 23, from 5:30-8 p.m. (dinner included)
  • Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (lunch and refreshments included)


The trainings are held at the Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, located at 1240 South Lumpkin St., Athens. After the training concludes, volunteers are expected to serve at least one Tuesday evening per month. Hearings are held at the courthouse in downtown Athens, 325 East Washington St., and typically last from 5:15-7:30 p.m. at the latest.

Museum of Art Presents 'Wonder Women' Family Day Event

In honor of Women's History Month, the Georgia Museum of Art will host the "Wonder Women" Family Day event Saturday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to noon. Have fun in the galleries exploring works of art by women artists, complete Art Cart activities, and create your own work of art to take home.


This is an in-person event at the museum, located at 90 Carlton St. in Athens. Please register for free tickets, either on the museum website before you show up or at the desk in the lobby when you arrive.


For those who cannot attend in person, Family Day to-go kits will be available for pick-up starting at 1 p.m. March 18 through the end of day Sunday, March 19, while supplies last.
