Reading Comprehension Through Music!

We had a great assembly Tuesday with Phil Tulga! Phil is a music professor at Sac State and performs with Broadway Sacramento as part of their orchestra. Today, Phil helped students understand the following reading comprehension terms:
  • sequence
  • inference
  • prediction

He tells stories through music, such as the Rudyard Kipling story, "The Elephant's Child." See if your student can remember the sequence of the animals that went to meet the crocodile (elephant, monkey, giraffe, snake). They may even remember how the elephant came to have a long trunk! It was a great way to get back into the swing of things after a three-day weekend! Here are a few online resources from Phil you can use with your child:

We have so many fun activities planned for the end of the year. We really want ALL students to be able to participate, so please coach your students EACH MORNING on being the best version of themselves! Remind them to use their words, ask adults for help when needed, and have safe hands. Thank you for your help these last few days of school! We really want our students to SHINE!

Warmly,

Carrie Manriquez, Principal

Covid Protocols

As a district and site, we have seen a sudden increase in Covid cases. We really need your help to minimize the impact of this. Students who unknowingly come to school with Covid could pass it on to a classmate. Students who get Covid this late in the year could conceivably miss all of their end of the year festivities, and we really don't want that to happen! Here's how you can help:

1) Self-screen for symptoms daily using the symptom checker below

2) Do NOT send a sick child to school. Whether or not they have Covid, we don't want to be passing colds and flus to others

3) If your child has been out sick (or is sent home by our office) they must receive a negative test result from a doctor or a San Juan site in order to return. Alternatively, you may provide a doctor note stating there is an alternate diagnosis. We are happy to test here at school.

4) We have home test kits available in our office. Feel free to come in and take a kit (each kit includes two tests) so that you can test at home if your student is feeling sick. Although these tests cannot be used as your "return-to-school" test, it could save you a trip if you get a positive result.

TK and Kindergarten Openings

We still have openings for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten next year! If you know a family who has children that are 4-5 years old, please make sure they know to register with San Juan Central and not wait until later this summer. If we are full, even our neighborhood students could be overloaded to another site. We can't wait to meet our newest Otters next year, so spread the word!

School Site Council

School Site Council (SSC) met on May 24th when we approved the LCFF budget for next year. Thank you to our Site Council Team for the important work you are doing!
