Fourth Grade Highlights Indiana History with Program

BSE's Fourth-Grade classes highlighted their study of Indiana history with a special program Tuesday night! All of Fourth Grade participated in the program, and the sets were created by the students in Miss Flynn's Art classes, who coordinated their Art study with the study of Indiana history. The program was highlighted with a performance by the Fourth-Grade Choir!


Thank you to our Fourth-Grade teachers -- Mr. Dankoski, Miss Mulvaney, Mr. Murch, Mrs. Murch and Mrs. Porzuczek. We appreciate the efforts of our students, and a special thanks to Mrs. Lehman, Mrs. Schwoeppe and Mrs. Flynn for all of their preparation and hard work. It was a wonderful performance!

First Grade Celebrates Dr. Seuss!

The BSE First-Grade classes have been reading and writing about Dr. Seuss in collaboration with Reading Across America. Their studies culminated on Wednesday when they dressed up in Dr. Seuss wear and marched through the halls of BSE with a morning parade! After school, they stayed for a Dr. Seuss Carnival!


Thank you to all of our First-Grade teachers (pictured below) -- Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Kalustian, Mrs. Siwik, Miss Young, Mrs. Gaudreau and Mrs. Valentine -- and the First-Grade students, parent volunteers and high school student volunteers who made this day so special!

Spring Break is Approaching!

The last day of classes for HSE Schools before Spring Break will be Thursday, April 2! Spring Break begins Friday, April 3, and classes will resume on Monday, April 13.


Enjoy the time off with your family and friends, and come back ready to start the final stretch!


The last day of classes for HSE students for the 2014-2015 school year will be Friday, May 29.

March Movie Night Cancelled

The PTO-sponsored Movie Night at BSE for tonight, March 27, has been cancelled. The next Movie Night will be on Friday, May 1, and will be sponsored by Destination Imagination! Details will follow on this!

Ident-A-Kid Cards Ordered

Ident-A-Kid pictures were taken at BSE last week. Those orders should be back at BSE in two more weeks.


ID card pictures only were taken for those students who brought orders with payments to give to the photographer that day. No re-takes or make-up pictures will be taken.

Spring Pictures Taken this Week

Spring Pictures were taken by Inter-State Studios on Wednesday. It takes approximately two to three weeks for orders to arrive back.

Volunteering in the Future for Lunch or at School?

We are so appreciative of all of our volunteers who assist teachers and staff at BSE! Most volunteers and lunch guests are aware of the procedures that need to be followed before volunteering or visiting BSE, but this is just a quick reminder that everyone must have a current background check on file and have viewed the Anti-Bullying webinar before volunteering or visiting BSE as a lunch guest. Background checks are considered current for three years, and the Anti-Bullying webinar must be viewed each school year.


Here is how you fulfill the requirements...


VOLUNTEER PROCEDURES

BACKGROUND CHECKS MUST BE DONE ON A COMPUTER ONLY.

(A COMPUTER, PHONE, OR IPAD MAY BE USED FOR THE ANTI-BULLYING TRAINING.)


1. Go to Hamilton Southeastern Schools website: www.hse.k12.in.us .

2. Click on “Parent Resources.”

3. On the left of the page, click on “PTO and Volunteering.”

4. Read and follow the instructions for submitting a volunteer background check. Click on the link and submit your background check. (An online credit card charge of approximately $13 is required for processing; expect processing to take up to six business days.)

5. Return to the original parent resources page that explained the background checks for volunteers.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the page to “HSE Anti-Bullying Training Webinar.”

7. Read the instructions, and note the link for the assessment required after viewing the video.

8. Watch the video (approximately 25 minutes in length).

9. Return to the assessment link and sign off that you have viewed the anti-bullying video.


LUNCH GUEST PROCEDURES


We love having lunch guests come and visit BSE! After completing the above requirements, please call the BSE Front Office between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on the day you would like to be a lunch guest to reserve a spot! There is a limit on the number of guests that can be accommodated daily, so please call during these times to reserve a spot, even if you are volunteering that morning and just want to stay for lunch!

BSE Kindergarten Enrollment Packets Available

Enrollment packets for students entering kindergarten at BSE in the Fall of 2015 are available for pick-up at BSE from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please see the BSE Kindergarten Enrollment Information sheet attached to the Skylert sent with this newsletter for more information.


For parents unable to enroll their children during these hours, Kindergarten Roundup for students attending BSE in the Fall of 2015 will be on Thursday, April 16, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at BSE.

HRE Kindergarten Enrollment Packets Available

If you are being redistricted to Hoosier Road Elementary next year, please attend the HRE Kindergarten Round-Up on Thursday, April 16, from 5:00 -7:00 p.m.


Enrollment packets may be picked up prior to the event from the HRE office from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You must bring the following documents to pick up an enrollment packet whether prior to Roundup or at the event:


1) Child’s Birth Certificate (must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2015)

2) Child’s Current Immunization Records

3) Copy of Lease or Mortgage

4) Copy of Current Utility Bill

5) Valid Indiana Driver’s License with Current Address or W-2 with Current Address

Honor and Excellence Nominations being Accepted

Honor and Excellence are two of the terms that appear on the Hamilton Southeastern crest. One might attribute these qualities to our students, and rightly so, but the same terms can also describe our staff. We honor representatives of our outstanding teachers at the end of each year through the Teacher of the Year program. We would also like to recognize representatives from our SUPPORT STAFF who demonstrate excellence in their work.


We are looking for support staff employees who go beyond the normal expectations of their job description resulting in outstanding support of Hamilton Southeastern students and the Hamilton Southeastern community.


Nominees must be Hamilton Southeastern employees. They could be from any support staff category, including: custodial services, transportation, food service, technology, grounds, secretarial, instructional assistants, maintenance, accounting, treasurers, school resource officers, nurses, etc. Qualifications to be nominated would include anything beyond the normal expectations of the person’s job. It could be a “one-time” act or a series of acts.


Nominations may be received from any person from the Hamilton Southeastern community, including: professional staff, support staff, parents, students, community members, etc.


Feel free to nominate past recipients of the award. Past award winners are eligible to be chosen again.


If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please complete the form on or before March 27, 2015. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Veegh at jveegh@hse.k12.in.us. Be sure to get your nomination in early - those received after March 27 will not be considered.

Fourth Graders Vote for Young Hoosier Book Award

Voting is now open through Friday, April 17, for the Young Hoosier Book Award. To be eligible to vote, students need to have read (or been read to) at least five of the 20 nominees. Participation is optional.

Thank you to BSE PTO for having provided funding to purchase one copy of each title for the Brooks School Elementary Library! The Hamilton East Public Library has multiple copies of each title, and Barnes & Noble and Kids Ink bookstores also stock each of the titles.


Young Hoosier Book Award has been a program of the Association for Indiana School Library Educators for more than 40 years.


Again, participation at BSE is completely optional.

Seasons are changing, which means Sunday is no longer the laziest day of the week! Get outdoors, squeeze in some physical activity and find an excuse to hang out with your friends.


Fishers Parks & Recreation’s Spring softball league is back; inviting adults 18 and older to participate in six weeks of play with games taking place Sundays between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Gather your friends, and create the dream team or contact Fishers Parks & Recreation to sign up as a free agent. Either way, Sunday will become your new favorite day of the week, spent getting competitive at Roy G. Holland Memorial Park. This league will end with a tournament, so we will really know which team’s earned bragging rights!


Playing for fun instead of playing to win? Choose between three levels of recreation play: A being the highest , B being moderate and C being the lowest competition level, to make the most out of your experience. Whether you are playing to win or playing as a teambuilding activity, there’s something for everyone! Registration is due by March 27, and this league costs residents $409 and nonresidents $614. Residency is based on the team captain who should plan to attend a mandatory captain meeting at the Roy G. Holland Memorial Park Building on Wednesday, April 8 from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. There will not be games May 10 and 24, unless they are needed as rain make-up dates.

New Family Orientation Night at Elementaries Announced

As HSE School District is preparing for the redistricting transition, we are excited to announce a New Family Orientation Night on Monday, May 18!


If your child will be attending Fall Creek Elementary, Harrison Parkway Elementary, Hoosier Road Elementary, New Britton Elementary, Sand Creek Elementary or Thorpe Creek Elementary next year, please join their staff and community at those schools from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. on May 18. Similarly, if your child will be new to Brooks School Elementary next year, please join the BSE staff and community at BSE from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., as well.


At this time, you will be able to meet staff, tour the building and learn more about your new school, PTO and community. Your new school is very excited to see you!

FFA Holding Plant Sale


The Hamilton Southeastern FFA will once again be offering a great variety of bedding plants, hanging baskets and combination patio pots (at reasonable prices) for Mother’s Day, and your spring gardening and outdoor decorating needs. Tomato plants and a few other vegetable plant varieties and herbs will be available for purchase, as well.


As in the past, the plant sale will be held on the east side of HSE High School Greenhouse, east of Olio Road on 126th Street. The sale will begin April 25, and continue through May 9, from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Swim Lessons Being Offered

Southeastern Swim School is excited to announce that we will be offering swim lessons at the brand-new Hamilton Southeastern High School Natatorium for Spring, 2015. Daytime and evening lessons will be offered in April and May. Hamilton Southeastern High School is located at 13910 East 126th Street. Group lessons will be offered for children ages 3 and older. Children must be toilet-trained or wear swim diapers to participate in swim lessons.


Openings are available for both daytime and evening classes in April and May. Registration for Spring, 2015, classes IS NOW OPEN. Summer, 2015, class schedules will be released soon. In addition, daytime lessons from September, 2015-May, 2016 IS OPEN. Spaces are limited and will fill up quickly- RESERVE YOUR CLASSES NOW!!

Southeastern Dive Club Offering Try-Outs

Southeastern Dive Club is back at HSE beginning April 13. Please join us in celebration of the end of construction and the beginning of a new season as we welcome new athletes to our program. We are offering try-outs and program evaluations every Tuesday and Thursday in April from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. We offer programs for every age and ability.

Southeastern Swim Club Holding Try-Outs

Southeastern Swim Club offers multiple practice groups for all age levels, and there are lots of practices offered so that your child can stay fit…Southeastern Swim Club is offering the opportunity for evaluations for all interested new swimmers!!


Come join the fun with Southeastern Swim Club of Fishers in their BEAUTIFUL, NEW 50-meter pool!! Interested swimmers should come prepared to swim a minimum of 25 yards freestyle with breathing to the side and backstroke. The evaluation and consultation should take approximately 15 minutes. Please bring a swimsuit, goggles and towel.

Registration is required. Bricks 4 Kidz classes provide an extraordinary atmosphere for children, where we learn, we build, we play… with LEGO® bricks. Programs are built around proprietary model plans, designed by engineers and architects, with exciting themes such as space, construction, and amusement parks. LEGO® kits will be provided for use during the session.

No registration is required.
Would you like to read to a dog, or just pet a dog and get doggie kisses? Love on a Leash will have local volunteers here with their registered therapy dogs. Reading to dogs helps kids build self-esteem and confidence.


Harry Potter Hang Out!

Come join all the fun as we party down with a Harry Potter theme. There will be individual & team activities with an emphasis on The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. The Importance of Preparation: Post-Secondary Success While in High School

David Riegle, Student Services Coordinator with Purdue University's College of Technology (Anderson campus) will host an open talk about the admission process (specifically about Purdue, but also in general terms) and the importance of students preparing themselves for post-secondary success while in high school. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and discuss their academic interests.


YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT: Online Safety for Teens

Wednesday, April 29, 6:00-7:00 p.m., (Ages 13-19)

This program will help teens learn techniques and tips to protect themselves online, the importance of protecting personal information (i.e. identity theft, digital footprint, etc.), highlight the latest online scams and provide information about other services provided by the Attorney General’s Office (i.e. Consumer protection, lifeline law and FAFSA).

Arbor Day – Let’s Flock NPD


As a Tree City USA member for the seventh consecutive year, we take great pride in our Arbor Day celebrations and invite residents to get involved in numerous ways! Express your creativity by decorating a flamingo for your chance to win a Lawn Pride Prize Pack*!


Decorated flamingos will be on display prior to the showing of Gnomeo and Juliet on Friday, April 24, beginning at 7 p.m. Stop by early to vote on your favorite flamingo while we recognize everyone who sponsored a tree to be planted this year! Tree Planting Call for Sponsors


This Arbor Day, team up with Fishers Parks & Recreation for a special opportunity to support the health and vitality of our community’s park system! Families, businesses, organizations, scout troops, and individuals are all welcome to sponsor a tree for any reason, and a commemorative plaque will be displayed next to the tree you sponsor.

Sponsorship cost varies by species, and trees will be planted in the Spring as weather permits. Deadline for inclusion in the 2015 planting is Thursday, April 23, and all sponsors will be announced during our Arbor Day event.

This one-day service event scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., offers residents countless ways to get involved.


During Keep Fishers Beautiful, there are opportunities to work alongside residents, volunteers, businesses and organizations. The Neighborhood Blitz offers you the opportunity to partner alongside your neighbors, community and friends to complete beautification projects in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Fishers. However, there are also opportunities to complete projects at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve or other parks in our community as part of Spring Service Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.


Keep Fishers Beautiful also includes the Spring Recycling Day, where you can finally get rid of unwanted materials at low or no cost. While you’re there, don’t forget to pick up a pack of Keep Fishers Beautiful seeds to plant in the location of your choice!
