Mullane Family Scholarship Winner
Current DeSales 8th Grader, Parker Karaszewski was named this year’s Mullane Family Scholarship recipient. Parker is involved in DeSales soccer, DeSales basketball, DeSales Track & Field, Destination Imagination, National Junior Honor Society and valued member of the DeSales St. Francis Society.
“Parker exemplifies the characteristics we hope all DeSales graduates possess. He is kind, hardworking, conscientious, and filled with faith. We are grateful to the Mullane family for allowing us the opportunity to recognize such a deserving student,” Principal Karen Judge Rahill, DHS ‘87 said about Parker and this annual award.
Parker described his time at DeSales; “DeSales has been like a home to me ever since I was in preschool. I have grown up with a strong set of friends, been educated by the best teachers and experienced so much. By participating in athletics, I learned the importance of sportsmanship, I developed exceptional skills in teamwork through STREAM and in St. Francis Society the importance of volunteerism. I look forward to continuing my Catholic education in high school.”
Parker will attend St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore. Congratulations!

NYS Testing for Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts
On March 29th & 30th (make- up 3/31), we will be giving the New York State Assessment in English Language Arts to all students in grades 3-8. As was the case last year, opting out will not take place for the following reasons:
- The tests help us to help your children. The Lockport City School District looks at students’ state test scores as a factor in determining eligibility for special education services.
- We use the data from these tests to guide our curriculum.
- Student performance on these tests does not affect their report card grades.
- It is important to know how DeSales compares with other private and public schools in our area and across the state.
Below are some test taking tips to help your child do his or her best:
The night before:
- Help your child get to bed on time. Research shows that well-rested students perform better on assessments.
- Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines can add to anxiety and concern.
- Mention the test to show you're interested and encourage them to do their best.
- Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of test days.
The morning of the test:
- Get up early to avoid rushing. Be sure your child is at school on time.
- Prepare a healthy, filling breakfast.
- Acknowledge that tests can be tricky and are designed so no one will know every single answer. So, no need to be concerned if you are faced with a problem you don't know how to solve. Explain that doing your best is what counts.
After the test:
- Talk to your child about their feelings about the test, make sure to acknowledge the effort they put in.
- Praise them for their hard work!
Thanks for your cooperation in helping us ensure your child is receiving the best education we can provide!
