Unit 1 Overview
Getting Started
Hi everyone and welcome to our class!
My name is William and I will be your instructor for CM107 – College Composition I. I’m excited to work with each of you this term as we explore effective communication. Effective communication helps us in every aspect of life, whether we are advocating for our children with the school system, petitioning our bosses for a raise, or educating those we serve in our careers about something they need help with. In this course, we will focus on reading and writing effectively to inform ourselves and others about something important related to your future career.
If this is your first online experience or college course, all the course numbers and icons may seem a little confusing, but don’t let it all overwhelm you. Just like with anything new, it takes a little getting used to. Just go into the class and familiarize yourself everything and if you have any questions, please let me know. You can contact me at Wjohnson3@purdueglobal.edu.
What is Unit 1 About?
What is Due in Unit 1?
1. COMPLETE UNIT 1 READING
2. COMPLETE LEARNING ACTIVITIES - Please note that you will find your reading, practice, and certification Learning Activities you need to complete for your gradebook 5/5 points in the Hawkes Learning link in this course. For help with accessing the Hawkes Learning link in the CM107 course, please see the document attached below this announcement entitled Introduction to Hawkes Learning - Student Guide.
3. PARTICIPATE IN THE DISCUSSION BOARD
- Post your well-developed and effectively edited discussion, making sure to answer all questions fully. Be sure to review the rubric and instructions prior to posting.
- Respond to at least 2 classmates' initial posts and instructor and classmates' questions as well, making sure you meet or exceed all requirements. Note that responding to 2 classmates is a minimum requirement but will not earn you an A. Review the Rubric to identify requirements for A level grades in this course.
- Finally, remember that, in order to succeed as a writer, reader, thinker, and learner, you will need to consider who you are writing to (your audience) and why you are writing (your purpose). Successful writing begins with thinking about audience and purpose. For more information about why audience and purpose are important to writing success, and to help you get started with our first class discussion, review the following Kaplan University Writing Center information:
4. COMPLETE SEMINAR
- Complete Seminar by either participating in live Seminar or completing Seminar Option 2. You do not need to complete both.
5. WRITE YOUR UNIT 1 LEARNING JOURNAL ENTRY
- Be sure to read the journal TOPIC requirement, which changes from week to week. You must write on the assigned topic and submit this to the Unit 1 Journal tab in order to receive credit. You must also meet paragraph requirement.
Managing Your Time
Remember that while everything is due no later than Tuesday, you will reduce your stress levels, be more successful, and learn more in Unit 1 if you complete work throughout the unit. If you find it helpful, feel free to use these Best Practice recommendations to exceed all Unit 1 requirements without stressing yourself out and running the risk of not completing everything on time:
- Complete Hawkes Learning Activity Quiz by Thursday at 11:59 pm ET
- Complete Initial Discussion Board post by Saturday at 11:59 pm ET
- Complete at least 2 responses to classmates' initial Discussion Board posts by Sunday at 11:59 pm ET
- Complete Learning Journal by Monday at 11:59 pm ET
