"Achieving Our Dreams through Education"
THIS WEEK
Student Safety
Many of you know, through the local media and through school circulated messages that our district high school was recently in a possibly dangerous situation. Many of you wanted specific information to the situation at hand, but as your principal I was only privy to the same information that you were given. So when you heard that we did not have school on Friday, I found out at the exact same time and time.
Making decisions, such as closing school for possible safety reasons is never easy. I know because I have had to make them before. People are upset if you close school and equally upset if you stay open. They are also upset on how school was closed and people were notified. Everyone cannot be pleased and it is easy for those not making the decision to have an opinion. There is always a critic who thinks they know how something should have happened, but hindsight is always 20/20 and arm chair quarterbacks are a dime a dozen. I will say that it is always good practice to err on the side of caution, especially when it come to school safety. So I applaud those who had to make this difficult decision.
This situation shows us that we as educators have a very important job. It is our job to teach kids what we think should be obvious. We need to teach them about being safe and responsible. We need to teach them that society has rules, rewards and consequences. We should never assume a student knows what is right or wrong and make sure that we teach them. To us as adults certain behaviors, such as what you can bring to school, seems obvious. But it is our job to make sure kids know what society expects.
