Weekly Tech Update 4/26 to 4/30

The Super Mario Effect

Gamification usually elicits one of the following 2 responses when it’s brought up in conversation, and not necessarily in this order: 1) The students play video games all the time now! When is it time for them to learn? or 2) Perfect, my students play video games all the time, how can I use this to my advantage in my classroom. I am not advocating, nor am I discouraging the strategy of gamification. But if you did want to check it out, check out John Meehan and Michael Matera’s EMC2Learning. Gamification doesn’t have to be just about games though! It can also be a mindset. Check out this TED talk by former NASA engineer, Mark Rober. In this TED talk, The Super Mario Effect: Tricking Your Brain Into Learning, he talks about the positive effects of removing the pressure of grades and replacing it with a gamification mindset so that students were more willing to continue their learning… and he has the data to prove it! Who doesn’t remember growing up playing Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Super Mario Brothers! How many times were we unsuccessful, but we kept going back for more :) The link to his TED talk can be found here, or click on the image.
This past winter there was an update to the Microsoft Exchange server which affected the aesthetics of our emails that may contain images. After several attempts to get the newsletter whitelisted through the MORIC(thank you to Jeff Wood and Derek LaLonde for their efforts), it just doesn't appear that it is going to happen. So with that said, and because the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, I would like to make accessing the newsletter easier for you so you do not have to click 'View in Browser' (Picture 3) every week. If you would like the newsletter to open, as it should appear in picture 1 above left, send me a personal email and I will replace your Outlook address on the mailing list with your personal email. If you don't mind clicking view in the browser every week, I APPRECIATE IT and you may continue doing so. This only affects the email when it is opened at school.

Mote Comes to Google Forms!

Mote is now integrated into Google Forms! Teachers can now record their voice right into the questions in Google Forms with Mote. This will create a clickable 'card' for the student. Students can also voice record their responses for questions that may require typing. Mote is an extension from the Chrome Web Store, access it by clicking here.

Speaking of Google Forms...

There are still some spots available for the Google Forms PD this summer. If you are interested in learning how to use, integrate, and apply some strategies to help 'cheat proof' your quizzes in Google Forms then sign up here.

"The heart of education is the relationship between the student and the teacher. Everything else depends on how productive and successful that relationship is." ~Sir Ken Robinson

Continue the conversation from the last InstaStrategies session

A great conversation last week from the participants of InstaStratgies. We even had a special guest from the Design School of Education in Florida. They were posed 1 question, 'What's working for you?'. The responses have been stitched together and can be accessed in the video below. If you would like to continue the conversation, anyone can access the conversation by clicking here or click on the image at left. You will be required to sign in using Google. Looking forward to the collaboration. Feel free to comment, post or even record your own response.

What's Working For You?

EdCamp comes to InstaStrategies

This week we will be hosting an EdCamp during InstaStrategies. If you have never been to an EdCamp style event, hop on in and experience one!

To join the meeting this Wednesday, click HERE for the 12 o'clock session or HERE for the 1 o'clock session, or email me and I will send you the Zoom link directly. If you would like, you can register for each session below, and I will email you the link on Wednesday so that you don't have to search very far for links. See registration buttons below.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are signed in with your district Zoom account or you will not be admitted from the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Getting in Compliance

In an effort to get in compliance with New York State's Data Privacy and Security Policy (NYS Ed Law 2D), WCSD has to check and make sure that the sites, software apps, and tools that are utilized at school and with our students are compliant. If there are sites, software apps, and tools that you are using with your students, could you please take a second and fill out the form below to let us know what those sites, software apps, and tools are? Fill it out as a team, a department, or on your own.

Here is the link to the form: https://forms.gle/tmbzuGeP7dttjZ6S8 or you can access it by clicking on the form icon located to the right.

Here is a link to more information on Ed Law 2D (provided by MORIC and RIC ONE).

Join The InstaStragies Google Classrom

Feel free to join the InstaStrategies classroom. All the resources shared during the InstaStragies are posted here.

🚨 Who Got Caught? 🚨

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Padlet

Padlet is a great tool for online collaboration. Consider it an online bulletin board where students and teachers can interact and share through a variety of different mediums. Padlet is currently being used at 3 buildings, so don't hesitate to reach out and see how you can integrate it into your curriculum. Here is a link to an article, written by Lucie Renard, 30 Creative ways to use Padlet for teachers and students if you need some inspiration.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 6 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged

Jayson St.Croix

Please contact me so we can collaborate on how to integrate more technology into your lessons.
