Miss Schmidt's Kinder Kids
Crestomere School - Kindergarten - June Newsletter
Wow! It's June!
It is absolutely crazy to say it is already June! This year has seriously flown by! Let me take this opportunity to say thank-you. Thank-you for allowing my first full year of teaching to be as awesome as it was. A great class with great families made it so enjoyable and memorable!
May was such a great month! It was jam packed with so many exciting things including a cute q & u wedding, a Red Deer River Watershed presentation, making homemade ice cream, a field trip to the ice cream store and Wildeboer farm, a great EXPO day, and an awesome trip to the Calgary Zoo and to Bluffton for Track Day!
Looking ahead, June will be just as exciting as we wrap up our Kindergarten year! We'll be focusing on Father's Day and being outdoors. Should make for some fun as we prepare for summer! And we can't forget . . . our trip to the Telus Spark Centre.
Note: We will be having a year end party on Monday, June 15th. Please stay tuned for more info! :)

Some general notes!
Wrapping up the rest of the year
Even though it is the last month of school, please continue to send your child to school. I am in the process of doing final assessments for report cards and it makes it a lot easier when the students are at school :) If your child is sick or going to be away, please make sure you let me know. Thank you!
June's book order is due on Wednesday, June 3rd.
Crestomere Book Swap! - UPDATE
Telus World of Science Field Trip!
Please make sure you send your child's permission form and money to the school by Wednesday.
**Please note - if you are driving your child, please make sure you give me a written note letting me know you are driving.
For this field trip, we are asking that ALL parent helpers meet us at the school on the day of the trip before we board the bus so we can tell you your groups.
What's coming for the month of June . . .
We will be wrapping up our Jolly Phonics alphabet program to learn the alphabet. For the remainder of the year, we will be focusing on the alphabet as a whole and reviewing the letters the students are still mixing up.
As mentioned, we will focus on sight words and segmenting words to break down the sounds. We will also be continuing with finger tracking when we're reading to make sure we don't miss any words :)
It's review time! Doing a general review of the concepts taught throughout the year through games will keep things fun for the last month of school!
As I stated in last month's newsletter, we will be representing numerals in two parts and practicing naming those parts. For example, looking at the different ways to make the number 5. (5 and 0, 4 and 1, 3 and 2). This is the first step of addition! :)
Science & Social Studies
For Science and Social Studies, we will be reviewing what we've learned throughout the year and will be enjoying the beautiful weather. We will be using the naturalization area as well!
Health & Life Skills
We will be learning about water safety to prepare for swimming! :)
Thank-you very much for allowing your child to complete their daily tasks on their own. I would like to ask that you continue to do this at home as well :)
Fine Motor practice
To remember how to hold the scissors correctly, I have taught the students a simple song:
Thumb is always up".
This helps them remember that their thumb always has to be pointing to the sky. To assist in your child's fine motor development, please have them continue to practice cutting on zig zag lines at home. Be sure to remind them their other hand has a job too! (To hold the paper and turn it as needed rather than turning the scissors). I will be assessing their zig zag cutting skills this month.
For the last couple months of Kindergarten, we will work on mastering our straight lines, curved lines and cutting circles. At this point in the year, the students need to know how to hold their scissors correctly. This is just one of the many things that will make things a whole lot easier in grade one :)
