HES Happenings
Where our Monomoy students are 'fin'tastic!
"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - Each morning as we get the day started next week, we will be listening to 'WINTER' by Antonio Vivaldi.
Our music this week is Winter from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi and is based on verses that were written to describe the seasons.
Here are the verses from “Winter”.
1 Frozen and shivering in the icy snow.
In the strong blasts of a terrible wind
To run stamping one’s feet at every step
With one’s teeth chattering through the cold.
2 To spend the quiet and happy days by the fire Whilst outside the rain soaks everyone.
To walk on the ice with slow steps
And go carefully for fear of falling.
3 To go in haste, slide and fall down: To go again on the ice and run, until the ice cracks.
The question this week is:
In what year was Antonio Vivaldi born?
Correct answers will get 2 water drops/bubbles for your class.

Maureen Keleher - Reading Teacher
I am thrilled to be a new Reading Teacher at Harwich Elementary School. I have been a Reading Specialist for the past ten years in New Hampshire and prior to that, a Special Educator for many years. I raised my family of three sons and a daughter in Vermont and now live on the Cape.
I was born in Detroit and grew up in Michigan, moved to Chicago for two years and then London, England for four of the best years of my life. It was the late sixties and early seventies and the live music and fashion scene flourished. My Dad worked either for airlines or hotels and our family traveled the world. He was a New Zealander and we would fly to see my grandmother, aunts and uncles in NZ. We broke the long trip in Tahiti or Fiji, often staying a while. My best childhood memory is of living in a hut on the beach in Tahiti for a month.
After London, I moved to Connecticut for college and found it tame by comparison. I have a BA in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Special Education from The University of Connecticut. I first taught in East Lyme, CT as a Special Educator, then taught outside of Washington D.C., in Vermont, New Hampshire and now Massachusetts. I went back for a Master of Arts at Dartmouth College when my four children were young to foster my love of learning and have something in my life that drove my creative side. I did my Master's thesis on the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.
I enjoy photography and am proud to own Arlo Guthrie's Fuji XE1 camera that he sold to me when he upgraded. I worked as a member of Ken Burns' film crew on the Baseball and Mark Twain documentaries that aired on PBS. The crew was invited to The White House for dinner by President Clinton after the Washington, D.C. premiere of Baseball.
My husband and I bought a cottage two years ago and I now live down the road from the beach. I see Doug on weekends either in Vermont or here as we transition from our 1795 house in Woodstock.
I come from a long line of teachers. My grandmother, mother and aunts taught as a calling and loved their careers. Watching a child learn to read is one of my greatest joys. I am happy to join the Harwich Elementary School community.
Jacqueline Smith - ELL Teacher
I felt inspired about teaching from the time I was young. My father was a 1st generation American and he moved our entire family to France for a year. I did 5th grade there and had a great time. After moving back to the US, I had a pretty normal school life until after high school, when I did a school- year exchange in Argentina. I remember the excitement and also the sheer exhaustion of learning to communicate and study in a second and then a third language.
Soon after graduating from college with a degree in English, my life took an unexpected turn. Through a simple prayer, I invited Jesus in my life and experienced a peace and forgiveness I had never known before. After that change, I began teaching young children weekly in Sunday School which became the foundation of my teaching experience.
I had been working in dentistry, but after being married, my husband gave me a break to allow me to follow up on my interest in literacy. I learned about the field of ESL and began teaching English to adults and then children. I became certified in ELL and have taught ELL students at the elementary level in public schools for the last ten years.
My personal interests include beach and concert going with friends, cooking and daytrips with my best friend (husband), and Bible study with a ladies’ group.
I love seeing my students grow in confidence and appreciate being able to be part of their success. I‘m looking forward to getting to know and work with the students, staff and families of HES! Thanks to everybody for the warm welcome!
