However, most of the clubs will stay same. If you need to make any change in your club selections based on new club additions and cancellations, it will be as easy as using an after school club change form and submitting it to Mr. Turan. The new selections and the after school club change form will be sent to families by the end of this week.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: SECTION OF ENCORE PARKWAY TO CLOSE FOR ONE YEAR
Starting Jan. 4, 2016, a portion of Encore Parkway will close to traffic for a project that will include constructing a new bridge over S.R. 400. The road will close between North Point Parkway and Westside Parkway for nearly a full year, the city of Alpharetta said.
“Because the bridge over Georgia 400 has to be removed, we have to completely close Encore Parkway from Westside Parkway to North Point Center East,” said Alpharetta Public Works Director Pete Sewczwicz. “Motorists will still be able to use the section of Encore between North Point Parkway and the traffic signal at North Point Center East.”
According to Alpharetta officials, the current bridge over GA-400 is too narrow to meet current and future needs.

COLLEGE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
7th grade students in Ms. Outler’s CMP class have spent their time learning to show empathy towards others, practicing goal-setting, making strong introductions, and identifying bias in the news media.
In these uncertain times of international turmoil and political division, it’s important for students to learn how to filter through media sources and come to their own conclusions about critical issues. Students practiced reading similar news stories presented by different organizations with the goal of identifying biased reporting.
Students have also been reading the classic young-adult novel, The Outsiders. This novel centers on a conflict between two social classes—the “Greasers” and the “Socs.” Although the novel was written in the 1960s, its themes of empathy, tolerance, group identity, and integrity remain relevant today—especially in light of recent events.

Homevisits- a great way to spend time with your teachers!

Drama Club's The Giver Play
Geo Spelling Bee
This week students in grades 4-8 will participate in the preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee. This preliminary round will take place in each social studies class and consist of seven rounds of questions. The categories this year each have a unique theme, though the questions remain over the geography of the United States, countries and capitals, as well as continents. This is a fun and entertaining way for students to show their knowledge of geography as well as spark increased interest in the subject.
There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. Students that qualify in their classes will participate in the school-wide geography Bee in January, with the school winner having the opportunity to qualify for a chance to compete at the state geography Bee in April.
For more information about the National Geography Bee, see their website at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/ or direct questions to your child’s social studies teacher.
Mrs. Whitlock's Winter Fun
First grade has been learning about comparing and contrasting by looking at different gingerbread themed stories. We started with The Gingerbread Man, and then read lots of fun variations and noticed the similarities and differences in each. Then students were able to create their own gingerbread character, illustrate it, and create their own story to go along with it. We had so much fun creating these new stories!

On going Programs
Six Flags Read to Succeed
If your child is in kindergarten through 6th grade, they are invited to participate in Six Flags' Read to Succeed Program! It is a fun incentive to get kids to read. Students need to record and log their reading over the next few months. If they submit a log with 6 hours of reading on it by Wednesday, February 24, 2016, they will receive one free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia!
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate
- Review the reading log provided by your child's language arts teacher. Your child should use this sheet to record what and how long he/she reads
- Your child must complete 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading
- Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of reading has been completed
- Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books (digital or hard copy). Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count!
- Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult - you can read to your child, or your child can read to you.
- Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her language arts teacher by Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Your child's teacher will submit your child's information and minutes read.
- Late entries will NOT be accepted
Happy reading!

Social Studies Fair
Fulton Science Academy has been very successful at all levels of the Social Studies Fair, with students taking first place in the state competition three times.
This year we are excited to be able to once again extend the project due date a bit so that it does not coincide quite as much as the Science Far. There will be checkpoints this semester, but the final paper and visuals will be due at the beginning of next semester rather than before the holiday break. It is our hope that this removes some of the burden and allows students to achieve their full potential on both projects.
Important due dates to note:
01/06/16 - paper due
01/12/16 - visual due
01/20/16 - school fair
