English
English I Honors: Students completed their second formal essay for the course, a poetry explication. Students who did not receive an 80 or above, were provided the opportunity to revise these essays. They were also given a new turn in date for the opportunity to revise their final grade on that assignment.
This week, we began our study of Epic Poetry, with Homer's work, The Odyssey. Students have begun reading the epic tale, and were assigned a Greek god/goddess or character from the epic to research and create a presentation on. Presentations are due Tues., Oct 8, and we will hold presentations on Oct.8 and 9th. Students were also introduced to their next formal essay, a Literary Analysis of the Epic Hero, which will be due on October 16.
English IV Honors: Students learned how to complete an APA Annotated Bibliography. Essays #2-#3 have been combined to condense the workload of each essay. Therefore, students will complete a comparative analysis essay focused on Medieval society and Chaucer’s satirical characterization, using the APA documentation style. The first step in the process is for students to select a specific character and a specific aspect of society for comparison and analysis. Students need to find five scholarly sources, using the Coastal Carolina scholarly database. The five resources will be documented in an Annotated Bibliography. Finally, students will draft an extended research essay.
Due dates and grade values have been posted in TEAMS and in the Content Library in OneNote. The final due date has been moved forward to Friday October 18, 2019 at 11:59 PM.
Regarding the Graduation Project: Students have had the required forms since the beginning of the semester. The six-week grading period and several students are still missing forms. The zero for the missing items will be replaced when the forms are submitted.
There are a few students who have yet to secure a mentor. The final due date for all forms, products, and mentor log is November 26, and presentations will take place on December 5th. Please help your child manage his or her time to ensure they are prepared to complete this task in a timely manner.
Math
Honors Math 2: Students took a test on Unit 3 this past Friday and had an opportunity to redo the group assessment on Unit 3. All grades will be updated by Monday evening. Next week we will begin Unit 4 Basic Geometry. The only assessment next week will be a notebook quiz on Tuesday.
Honors Math 4: Students will have a quiz on Tuesday on solving right triangles and right triangle applications. Then we will start investigating the graphs of all six trig functions with a focus on period, amplitude, and phase shift.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: This week we have finished our unit on the Philosophy of the Constitution. We started looking at the process that went into writing our Constitution, beginning with the Articles of Confederation, moving on to the compromises that resulted in the final draft of our nation’s governmental foundation. Next week we will look at some of the Federalist papers and we will take our test for this chapter on Friday.
AP WH: We finally received our textbooks this week. Personally, I was thrilled- the students maybe just a little less so! :) I have asked them to keep their textbooks at home as most of our homework now will be readings and questions from this text. I will let the students know when they need to bring their textbooks to school, as I will be conducting reading checks to make sure they are reading for understanding- highlighting/underlining and making notes. Students are allowed to write in these books and I encourage them to do so. We have studied the Byzantine Empire this week and will move onto Islam and Arabia next week. We are focusing on how religion influenced European society and culture for the next few weeks.
American History I Honors: : We have started our study of Unit II: Nationalism & Sectionalism. Students have a Historical Figure Project & Unit II study guide due Tuesday.
Science
Chem Honors: We are currently working on Unit 6: Bonding and Chemical Structure. Next week we will be finishing up Unit 6 with a test on Wednesday Oct 9th. We will be doing a lab on Friday Oct 11th to finish off Unit 6 and start Unit 7 on Thursday.
APES: We have just started Unit 3: Populations. Students have all assignment due dates posted in the Class Notebook on Teams and will be working on Human Population Graph Labs next week.
Biology Honors: In Biology this week we have been covering DNA: The secret of life. Next week we will be looking at advances in Genetic Technology.
