Principal's Message
Motivation…This topic can be essential when trying to have your child complete schoolwork. Let’s face it, some children love to finish tasks and they get satisfaction (intrinsic) from their accomplishments, while others need more praise or positive reinforcement to achieve their goals. Either way, I believe everyone needs a little inspiration occasionally. We should try to stay away from material objects for rewards (extrinsic) as much as possible. Even though ice cream does work wonders, ha-ha! This type of motivation does have its place. For instance, a high interest book for your child instills something positive and educational. We would love for our children to just do positive things out of the goodness of their heart…that’s the best! Praising and complimenting is also an excellent motivator. Please read the following article related to this subject.
“Choose your words carefully if you want to motivate your child”
Sometimes the words you choose can send a message to your child that’s quite different from the one that you intended. For instance, suppose your child is doing a chore around your house. It is taking much longer than it would take you. Finally, you say, “Here, let me do that”. You may think that you just simply finished a task for your child. But what was communicated might have been internalized as they don’t have the ability to complete the task.
Sometimes the words parents say to motivate their children actually turn out to have the opposite effect. Here are some things you might say to your child that will motivate them to keep trying, or to do their best.
When you say:
“Why don’t you give this a try?” Your child will think they have the ability to do it on their own.
“What would happen if you added more water?” Your child will believe that they are problem solvers. But if you say, “That’s too dry”. Your child will think that they’re not doing it right.
"I never thought of trying it that way”. Your child will feel that they made a good decision. However, just changing the words and saying, “I don’t do it that way”. The meaning your child will internalize is that they are doing it wrong.
Use this approach when your child is doing schoolwork. If they are stuck on a tough math problem, ask, “Have you ever solved a problem like this before?” Keep focusing on the things your child can do. The more you encourage your child, the more likely they are to stay motivated.

Counselor Corner!
Welcome back to another amazing year here at Spencer Elementary. I am so excited to begin working with students this year to help facilitate and promote social-emotional growth and learning! I will be providing classroom lessons, small group activities, and individual support this year.
As a reminder, your school counselor is here to support children with social-emotional concerns that are impacting their success in the classroom. We will begin working with individuals as needs arise within the months of September and October. I look forward to offering small peer groups in October. If your child is struggling at school, we will work together with the classroom teacher to determine whether or not school-based services would be beneficial. We may also be able to offer resources or contacts if your family believes that outside support is an option.
The Elementary Counselor Team also has the BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have, and I will do my best to support your child.
