Meet Your School Counselors!

Sheila Marshall (K, 2, 4) one of your school counselors at Brier Creek Elementary. I am thrilled for the opportunity to be working with the students, teachers, administrators, and parents whom I so highly regard. I received my master’s in counseling from Webster University and my post masters in school counseling from University of North Carolina.

In serving as a Counselor for the families of Brier Creek Elementary, my mission is to provide a comprehensive school counseling program that improves student achievement and enhances the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. I have been working for Wake County Schools for over three years and have prior experience as a behavioral interventionist, and a counselor in various settings. It is my intention to impart the knowledge and experience I have acquired to help our children succeed academically, socially and emotionally to help cultivate them into 21st century achievers.

I made a promise to be the best counselor for the children I serve. This promise started with my own two children to ensure they had all the academic, social and emotional support they needed to be well-rounded in life.

My relaxation time consist of reading, bowling with my grandson, watching movies especially uplifting/inspiring.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for assistance.

Jennifer Lee (1, 3, 5) I am thrilled to be working with 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade families this school year as their counselor! This is my eleventh year at BCES and sixth year as a school counselor. Each month we will send out an online newsletter to keep you updated on our comprehensive counseling program. The school counseling mission statement is to provide a comprehensive counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. In partnership with our fellow staff members, families, and our community, the counselors at Brier Creek Elementary School will provide a foundation of 21st century life skills that will empower students to think critically, visibly, and globally.

For as long as I can remember I wanted to work with children. I graduated from SUNY Cortland in NY with a Bachelor’s Degree in Childhood Education and was a first and second grade teacher for almost 9 years. While teaching, I realized my true passion was to become a school counselor. In 2014, I received my Master’s Degree in School Counseling from NC State. When I am not working with children I enjoy spending every minute I can with my 2 year old twins, Connor and Julianna and my husband Chris. We also love traveling to NY to see family, going to the beach, and cheering on the Tarheels as well as my favorite sports team...the SYRACUSE ORANGEMEN!!

What's Happening? Classroom Counseling Lessons

As an integral part of our school's comprehensive school counseling program, we will be delivering Classroom Counseling lessons to your child. This is a way for us to teach the whole school and get to know our students better. Our lessons are focused on Social Emotional Learning standards as well as ASCA's (American School Counselor Association) Mindsets and Behaviors. They will focus on skills and strategies that are an integral part of their academic learning and essential in life. During Remote Learning, our monthly lessons will be uploaded to your child's homeroom teacher's google classroom as asynchronous lessons. Mrs. Lee and Ms. Marshall have a tab on each teacher's page that students can reference for the monthly lesson as well as any tools and strategies. We love Classroom Counseling!

This month, all students have had an introduction to the school counselor lesson. In this lesson, I have shared some information about myself so students can begin to get to know Mrs. Lee. I have shared some things about my family as well as some of my favorite things to do!

Mrs Potato head has many parts needed to be whole, similar to the tools and strategies I can use to help students their social and emotional skills.

School counselors do not provide therapy, however work to help children develop coping skills to deal more effectively with the problems they may face. If a child continues to need more support, we will provide parents with information about appropriate community resources for long-term, therapeutic counseling.
