PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Bidwell Families,
A concerning trend has recently been brought to my attention and I wanted to alert you immediately so that you could have an appropriate conversation with your young people and be extra vigilant of their online content. I am not aware of this trend happening at Bidwell but I want to make sure it never does.
There is an online game called “Momo Challenge”. This game conceals itself within other harmless looking games played by our kids. There has also been reports of parts of the game being viewable on YouTube, like “Peppa Pig” and “Fortnite” videos. The Momo image is edited into the videos by hackers.
The main character is ‘Momo’ and when downloaded tells your child to communicate with them via “WhatsApp” and a number of other widely used apps. "Momo" then tells your child to self-harm or she will put a curse on them. Ultimately, the “game” will end with a directive from Momo to your child to commit suicide. **Warning** Images of Momo are disturbing and will almost certainly frighten a young child—it definitely creeps me out! Be careful when/if you look up this game/character. I tried to synthesize info I gleaned from several stories into this message to save you from looking Momo up yourself and forever having that image in your head.
As always, please supervise the games your kids play and be extremely mindful of the videos they are watching on YouTube. Ensure that the devices they have access to are restricted to age suitable content.
Please contact me with any questions.
We love your kids and want to keep them as safe as possible at home and at school. It’s a crazy world we live in and now more than ever it takes a whole village.
Respectfully,
David McKay
Principal
