PrinciPaw's Post
Wow, we have completed almost six weeks of school! Times flies when you’re busy learning!
Tomorrow, September 22nd, Shreve Island will be presented with our Healthy Schools Bronze Medal Award and our National Let's Move Active Schools Award. These are rare achievements and we are only one of five schools in Louisiana who have achieved this distinction. We are committed to promote lifelong healthy habits by emphasizing nutrition and active movement in our school. I would like to thank and congratulate “Coach D” Andre Dicharry for all his efforts to get us all on board and to this point. Here are a few of the initiatives that have been put in place as a result of his
advocacy:
1. Shreve Island has cut out candy sales and replaced them with fresh fruit and healthy snack stands.
2. Soda is never sold or served to students for any event on campus.
3. A salad bar is now available for our fourth and fifth-grade students during lunch.
4. Parents are provided with guidance for sending snacks that meet nutritional standards.
5. Teachers are regularly using active movement “brain breaks” in class to get the blood circulating.
A great deal of the change is due to parent cooperation. Many thanks to the parents who are sending snacks that follow our snack guidelines. As adults, we are the best role models for our children when it comes to healthy eating habits. We could not have achieved this goal without your support. If you would like to review the snack policy, please see the guidelines posted below or go to shreveislandelementary.com and click on the "Snack Recommendations" tab.
Due to space limitations we ask that parents participate in the event by live streaming it from your home or work. The event begins at 8:30 AM. The password is bronzemedal. To learn more about Shreve Island's live streaming please read below.
Don't forget that Shreve Island's Instructional Intersession begins September 26th. Only students who are pre-registered and paid may attend. The following week, October 3rd-7th, the school will be closed for students and faculty.
I wish everyone a safe and happy intersession break!
