Student Heads to State Olympics
After a pandemic hiatus, Daniel Wright’s Special Olympics team competed in its second competition since the program came to the junior high in 2019. Students competed on Sunday, May 15, in the Region B Track and Field Spring Games with students receiving medals and one student advancing to the state competition.
All the students did an excellent job participating in running and throwing events.
- Elcy Arroyo Castro received two ribbons for outstanding participation in the 50-meter run and the tennis ball throw.
- Yuvi Vummiti received a bronze medal for his division in the softball throw.
- Luis Gonzalez received two bronze medals in his division for both the softball throw and the 50-meter run.
- Siddharth Arumugam received a bronze medal in his division for the 50-meter run.
- Chase Mattson received a gold medal for his division in the softball throw and a silver medal for his division in the 50-meter run. Chase will be advancing to the state competition in Bloomington-Normal for the softball throw on June 18!
A huge shout-out to our coaches Anna Healy and Alex Funk and their student assistants for helping to guide the DW Olympians.
“All of the athletes did an excellent job representing Daniel Wright and living up to the Special Olympics oath, ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ A special thank you to our amazing allied partners and all of the people who came out to support our athletes,” Coach Healy said.

Science Olympiad - 6th at Nationals
The Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team took 6th place at the recent national tournament where over 2,000 students competed. Four students took home national champion first place medals: Shivaani Sivaraman and Rhubyn Letuchy in the Bridge event, as well as Lucas Niu and Richard Xu in the Crime Busters event. The team consists of students in grades 6-8.
"The kids work very hard during the nine-month season to achieve the goal of representing Illinois at the national level. We were met with many different kinds of challenges all season, especially with COVID illnesses, and each time the students stepped up to do their part to maintain momentum toward nationals. I'm especially proud of our two national championship titles won for individual events," said Lisa Solesky, who coaches the team with Eric Rexer along with the assistance of parent volunteer coaches.

Artistic Endeavors
D103 students participated in the 42nd annual Consortium ArtFest at Stevenson High School this week. Only 15 percent of Daniel Wright students' artwork is selected for the art show.
Students from Sprague, Half Day, and Daniel Wright are selected for hard work, excellent attention to detail, originality, etc. Each of the selected students have a 2D or 3D artwork displayed. Mediums include pencil, pen, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, chalk pastel, clay, sculpture, collage, etc.
“Students get so excited when they find out their artwork has been chosen for display. For some students it is the highlight of their year. The show really is an amazing experience,” said Art Teacher Kerry Sweet.
Please visit the district Facebook page or Google Doc folder to see the students and their artwork.
