Girls
The Lady Brickies continued to press on through their toughest stretch of the season with a Tuesday night tilt against Duneland Conference powerhouse Lake Central (Regional finalist last year) and a Friday night trip to DeMotte/Wheatfield to take on the #3 ranked KV Kougars.
On Tuesday night in St. John, our girls battled one of the more successful programs in NWI ... with three 20+ win seasons and 3 sectional titles in the last 4 years, Lake Central is for real.
It was a rough start as the Indians scalped the young Brickies in the 1st quarter - jumping out to an early 25-6 lead. Hobart battled back in the 2nd quarter - playing the 'blue Indians' even as they entered the locker room down 35-15 at the half. Lake Central would go on to win 68-33, but it was the RESILIENCY of our Lady Brickies that stood out as they KEPT FIGHTING and scrapping until the final buzzer - again playing the Indians about even in the 4th quarter. Senior Samantha Vode led Hobart with 12 points and junior Gabby Ramirez tallied 8.
On Friday night, the trip south wouldn't get any easier as #3 ranked Kankakee Valley (also a sectional champion last season) posed a serious challenge for our ladies. Even though it was a different night, a similar script played out on the court as the Kougars owned the 1st and 3rd quarters and Hobart challenged in the 2nd and 4th. KV improved to 11-1 on the season with the 76-22 win.
The Lady Brickies continue to show glimpses of what we can be by season's end ... playing LC to a virtual tie (22-19) for half the game and staying with KV (23-12) as well for just as long. As Hobart continues to show a GREAT EFFORT consistently ... improvement will come and our girls will see their reward on the scoreboard!

Boys
After splitting their first two contests, our boys were back in action this week with their home opener on Tuesday and a Saturday night trip to Hammond Gavit to face of against the Gladiators (minus Russell Crowe)
On Tuesday, the Brickies played their 1st home game of the season, facing off against our Porter County neighbor - the Portage Indians ... and EVERYONE came out to see it! It was definitely the PLACE TO BE with JROTC, Pep band, Wolffgang ... the Hobart Middle School teams were even recognized at halftime! Ok ... on to the game ...
Portage jumped out to an early lead ... up by double figures in the early going, but Hobart BATTLED BACK with some timely shooting and LOTS of HUSTLE plays on both ends of the floor!! It was EXHAUSTING just watching our guys out there because they were playing SO HARD against the bigger, more experienced Indians. Every time Portage would start to pull away, the Brickies made another run and REFUSED to go away ... cutting the lead to a mere 3 points late in the game! Despite the SUPERIOR EFFORT exhibited by the young Brickies, Portage was able to escape H-town with a hard fought 61-51 victory.
Leading the Brickies were a pair of juniors - Caleb Banjoff and Tyler Schultz - who combined for 40 of Hobart's 51 total points. Sophomore Riley Johnston and junior Sean Underdahl each corralled 8 rebounds and sophomore Cameron Stojancevich dished out 3 assists in the loss.
On Saturday night in Hammond, it was ANOTHER nail-biter as Hobart squared off in THE ARENA with the Gavit Gladiators. This time it was the Brickies who jumped out to an early 17-9 lead ... only to see Gavit come charging back to lead 31-27 at the break. The 2nd half went back-and-forth as each team made runs but could not take control. Late in the game, Gavit scored to tie it at 50 ... Hobart missed on the ensuing possession and then SURVIVED two shots by Hammond in the final seconds to force OVERTIME! That's right folks ... we got 4 more minutes of basketball!!
In the extra session, sophomore David Brown scored Hobart's first 6 points, but it was Gavit that took the lead for good on a 3-pointer from the left wing with about 30 seconds left and then sank FT's to 'ice it' as the Brickies fell 64-59.
This is a young group ... EVERYONE who played Saturday was an underclassman. This is a fun group ... remember those 2 goals for the week? COMPETE and IMPROVE? Put a checkmark for both and get out and see these guys in action!!

Wrestling
Hobart won the first 3 matches of the night as freshman Trevor Schammert (113) won a major decision with a 12-1 victory and sophomores Cristian Padilla (120) and Connor Johnson (126) both won by fall to give the Brickies an early 16-0 lead!
Lowell did not go gentle into that good night ... winning the next 5 weight classes in a row - 3 of them by 2 pts or less - to take a 19-16 lead.
Senior Jacob Vode and sophomore Bobby Babcock would win at 170 and 195 to tie the score at 22 with only three weight classes remaining.
In the 220 lb match, it was junior Mark Mummey who brought the crowd to their feet and "sealed the deal" with an impressive pin at the 4:50 mark to give the Brickies a 28-22 lead!! Junior Chad Mclean lost a tough 1-0 match at 285 and the Brickies won by forfeit at 106 to complete the scoring. The final score of 34-25 gave Hobart a much needed victory to open Northwest Crossroads Conference action and improved the Brickies to 2-0 in dual meets this year!!
There was a lot of INTENSE ACTION as the two teams went back-and-forth ... but it was the Brickies who shined in the spotlight!!
If you haven't been out to see these guys, you are MISSING OUT! They are back at it this week on Wednesday at HOME against arch rival ANDREAN! 'Pin' it to your calendar and BE THERE!!
