What have we been up to?

It's hard to believe that the end of 2016 is right around the corner! We have been super busy in first grade, even though it is a short month in school! Here is what we have been working on and will continue to work on throughout the month of December and into January...

Reading: We have really become experts when it comes to visualizing. The children do a great job picking out words that help them turn stories into movies in their minds! We have also been working on summarizing a story by telling the beginning, middle and end and recognizing character traits. We will work on trying to add details about the characters and setting when we summarize. Furthermore, we will learn how to identify the problem in a story, recall the important details that lead to the solution and determine the solution for the problem at the end of a book.

Math: We are still working on adding and subtracting in math up to 20. We have learned several different strategies to help us solve both addition and subtraction problems. The children are encouraged to choose the strategy that works the best for them. We have also been hard at work on story problems. We are working on finding important words in story problems that tell us if the problem is addition or subtraction. Work on this at home by making up story problems for your child to solve! Soon, we will be learning about measurement.

Writing: Throughout the second quarter we are working on opinion writing. We have been writing our opinions about several different things including the best food, the best seasons and the best thing to play at recess. We will also be writing our opinions about the worst season, food, pets, etc. We have learned a great deal about making sure we have solid reasons and examples to back up our opinions.

Science: We are continuing to learn about different states of matter in science. We have explored several different types of liquids and solids. We learn about how we use them in our daily lives and where they are in the world around us.

Have a wonderful and relaxing winter break!

Holiday Party

Our holiday party will be in the afternoon on Friday, December 23rd. Thank you so much to all of the parents that have signed up to donate something. As a reminder, I will not need your help in the classroom that afternoon, but please send your donation to school with your child that morning or leave it in the main office by 10:45am for me to pick up. Thank you again!
