Are You Familiar with These Frequently Used Terms?
BICS - Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills – the language skills needed for everyday personal and social communication. Second language learners must have BICS in order to interact. It usually takes 1-3 years to completely develop this social language. BICS are not necessarily related to academic success.
CALP - Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency, or the language associated with native language literacy and cognitive development. These are the language skills needed to undertake academic tasks in the mainstream classroom. It includes content-specific vocabulary. CALP developed in a student's first language contributes to the development of CALP in the second language. It may take 5-7 years to develop CALP skills.
FEP - Fluent English Proficient (Level 5 or higher proficiency on WIDA assessments)
LEP - Limited English Proficiency (Levels 1-4 proficiency on WIDA assessments)
Indiana Standards Bootcamps
The Standards Bootcamps will be held on June 26 to 28 or July 17 to 19 at Marion University. These sessions are free to educators in Indianapolis, but teachers must register here.
