Principal's Message
Principal's Message
Hello Santiago Students and Families,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Santiago High School. We are looking forward to another exciting year of learning, involvement, and competition at the home of scholars, achievers, and champions. This summer we have been working to plan a smooth transition for all of our new and returning students. The support staff has been working hard all summer, and the teachers are back and ready for another successful year. This is a fun time of energy and anticipation as we get to know and work with new students full of talents, strengths, and abilities. We trust that everyone coming to school this year has already decided what opportunities they are going to take advantage of outside the classroom. Part of being a good citizen is getting involved in more than the classroom work. Find something that you are passionate about, and pursue it with tenacity. We will help you with your growth at Santiago, all we ask for is your energy and attention as you become the next generation of SANTIAGO SHARKS!

Santiago Policies & Procedures
Santiago ID Policy!
Students received their ID card and school issued lanyard at registration. Students either got a student ID card OR an ASB ID card if they purchased ASB membership for the year. All students will be required to visibly wear their Santiago ID DAILY on their Santiago lanyard while on campus. If a student loses or damages their ID card they will be required to get a replacement ID from the Shark Shop. Replacement ID cards cost $5.00 and replacement ASB ID cards cost $10.00.
Dress Code
Santiago High School follows the dress code set forth by the CNUSD Board of Trustees. Students in violation of dress code policy will be provided three (3) options to be dressed more to code during the school day.
- Students will be asked to put on their own alternative clothing, if already available at school, to be dressed more to code for the remainder of the day.
- Students will be provided with temporary school clothing to be dressed more to code for the remainder of the day.
- If necessary, students’ parents may be called during the school day to bring alternative clothing for the student to wear for the remainder of the day.

Attendance Matters at Santiago!
Reducing California’s high chronic absenteeism rates is a priority in the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
A "chronic absentee" has been defined in California Education Code (EC) Section 60901(c)(1) as "a pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the school days in the school year when the total number of days a pupil is absent is divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular day schools of the district, exclusive of Saturdays and Sundays."
Across the country, more than 8 million students are missing so many days of school that they are academically at risk. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.
This year Santiago, in cooperation with CNUSD, is taking steps to ensure students are attending school more regularly. Santiago High School will notify parents/guardians of attendance bi-weekly through our student information system (Q). As always, we encourage you to regularly check Q attendance and report any discrepancies.
ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATION CRITERIA
LETTER 1: COURTESY LETTER
- 3 or more days of school (excused and unexcused absences)
- No action required from parents/guardians. Parent/Guardian may request a meeting to review attendance.
LETTER 2: WARNING LETTER
- 7 or more days of school (excused and unexcused absences)
- No action required from parents/guardians. Parent/Guardian may request a meeting to review attendance.
LETTER 3: SART NOTIFICATION
- 10 or more days of school (excused and unexcused absences)
- School clerk will contact parents/guardians to attend a mandatory attendance review meeting with the student's school administrator.
After School Pick Up - 2:30 pm
PARKING DURING SCHOOL HOURS - PARK IN THE FOOTHILL DROPOFF
In order to have enough space for our staff in the upper parking lot, Santiago is asking parents to park on the Foothill drop off area when picking up your child, dropping something off, or if you have a scheduled meeting on campus. Curbs have been painted white and it is no longer a red zone. Thank you for your cooperation.
IMPORTANT SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
SHARK SHOP PURCHASES
Shark shop will not be open before school on the first day of school (Monday). Shark Shop will open at lunch and be open after school.
Starting Tuesday, August 13th, the Shark Shop will resume normal business hours (before school, both lunches, and after school).
Be a SHARK Week
This week your students will have a 34-minute block every day dedicated to everything your student needs to know about Santiago and what it means to Be a SHARK. We will be sending a nightly email to our parents/guardians with the video link from that day. Please review this video and discuss the contents with your Santiago student. Our goal is to create Scholars, Achievers, and Champions here at Santiago.
Student Schedules
Student schedules will be available online through Q Student Connect Saturday, August 10th. Students must either print out a copy or take a picture/screenshot of their schedule and bring it with them to school on Monday, August 12th. Students will report to their first-period class at 7:40 am with their schedule and ID card visibly displayed.
If your student missed their assigned registration day and also the make-up registration day, they should report to the theater at 7:40am for registration and to obtain a student ID card.
We look forward to starting another great year at Santiago. See you on Monday, August 12th!
