UNO
Students have been working hard on keeping UNO or earning back a letter if they lose one. Please remind your child about following expectations as we continue to move towards the end of the year.
Reading
This week we got back to our regular lessons and began our Character Studies Unit. In this unit, students are in book clubs and meet twice a week to discuss their books and their thinking. The expectation is that students are finishing their assigned reading for the day and stopping to jot down their thinking. This week, we have worked on getting to know our characters by paying attention to how they act and talk and then growing theories about our observations. We also took some time to review our roles and expectations when we meet with our book clubs.
Reading at night and you're not sure how to help your child? Here are some comprehension questions that you can use with your child when they read at home:
- How would you describe the characters? What in the text makes you think this?
- What will happen next in the story? Why do you think this?
- What kind of relationship do the characters have? How do you know?
- How does what you read today fit with the rest of the story?
- How did your character try to solve his problem/ overcome his challenge?
- How did your character change from the beginning to the end? How do you know?
- What lesson did your character learn?
Reading Challenge
We are keeping track of how many minutes we read monthly as well as in total for the year. If we reach our minute goal by the end of the year, we will be able to participate in a water day! Please note that if your child does not read at home, he will not be allowed to participate in water day or another other extra activities earned from at home reading!
Minutes read in March:
Minutes read for the year:
For 3rd QUARTER, STUDENTS NEED TO READ at least 100 MINUTES A WEEK!
Each month, students can participate in an extra recess if our class reaches our goal of just over 8,000 minutes for the month. Those who do not participate in reading at home sit outside with us and read.
Writing
This week students and I became familiar with three traditional fairy tales and students chose which one they wanted to adapt and make their own. Students were able to choose between Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students created their plans for their tales, making sure that each of their changes lined up and that their tale included the same parts/ elements as the traditional tale. We then began working on drafts of our tales.
Math
This week with fractions we have been working on comparing fractions using models and number lines. Next week we will continue to compare fractions using the greater than, less than symbols.
Does your child want to earn extra house points? Have him spend an extra twenty minutes on iReady myPath at home, send in a signed note of confirmation or email me, and 5 extra house points are earned! See the link below for help getting your child onto myPath at home.
Opportunity for house points!
Science
This week we discussed wrapped our conversation on how different surfaces affect how an object moves and moved into gravity. Students worked in groups to create parachutes to help slow down their skydivers flight.
