Chapter 6: Using Strategies That Appear in All Types of Lessons
Element 20: Assigning Purposeful Homework
"Homework is perhaps one of the most misused strategies in K-12 classrooms; it is too often assigned as a matter of routine (see Marzano & Pickering, 2007a, 2007b, 2007c). As the title of this element suggests, teachers must assign homework purposefully, which means they use it only when needed. The strategies for this element appear in the table below. Teachers can and should use homework as a form of previewing. Other legitimate uses of homework include activities that help deepen students' knowledge and practice skills and processes.
When strategies in this element produce the desired effects, teachers will observe the following behaviors in students:
- Students understand the purpose of homework.
- Students are better prepared for new learning after being assigned homework.
- Students' understanding is deepened after being assigned homework.
- Students' speed, accuracy, or fluency is increased after being assigned homework.
- Students report that completing homework has helped them learn."
