STEM Scouts at CRES
THEY'RE SMART.
LET'S MAKE THEM EVEN SMARTER.
STEM Scouts® is a national pilot program of the Boy Scouts of America focused on fun ways for girls and boys to learn more about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Groups of 12-15 youth meet with 3 adults for 90 minutes each week during the school year. Age ranges include 3-5th grade, 6-8th grade, and 9-12th grade.
There’s still time to register for the Cumberland Road Elementary STEM Scouts lab! Lab meetings are held on Monday nights from 6:30-8:00pm starting February 1, 2016. To register, visit https://stemscouts.org/find-a-lab/council/1/indianapolis/ Cost is $150 per youth.
Building on the natural curiosity and enthusiasm that young people have for learning, STEM Scouts uses hands-on activities and interaction with STEM professionals to make learning fun, fast paced and creative.

Public Education Forum - Firearms
Firearms Safety Poster
Public Education Forum – Firearms Safety
I would like to invite you and your students and families to attend a firearms safety forum that will be hosted by Hamilton County Sheriff Mark Bowen on Thursday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds. Although this is a controversial topic and not one that some believe would be important to schools, we must realize that our society is changing and many children and teens are exposed to firearms on a daily basis. It is crucial that children and teens understand the responsibilities that come with firearms and the dangers that can occur if proper safety is not followed. Sheriff Bowen feels that this is a very important topic that needs to be addressed in our community.
Like many agencies across the United States, the Sheriff’s Office is currently seeing an upswing in the number of gun permits being issued. It is a fact that many of the families in our community own firearms, and Sheriff feels that there is an important safety message that needs to be spread regarding firearm ownership. A recent headline on a local TV station was titled, “4th Grader Brings Gun to School in Johnson County,” and there was a teen shooting in the parking lot of Lawrence Central High School last Friday night. Headlines such as these indicate that more education is needed for the entire family regarding the serious nature of this topic. This event is not a gun show; it is a free educational forum aimed to promote responsible firearm ownership. Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Scott Pass will present attendees with recommendations for safe storage and usage of firearms.
The mission of the evening is to provide information, tips, and resources to attendees so that owners understand the responsibilities that come with weapons and make sure that children and other family members stay safe by understanding the consequences that could occur with the mishandling of firearms. As with other forums hosted by Sheriff Bowen, this is a free community event.
You will find the press release and a community flyer attached. Feel free to distribute this information.
If you have additional questions or would like to speak with Sheriff Bowen regarding this forum, my contact information is listed below and our Public Information Officer’s contact information is listed on the press release.
Thank you for your time,
Allison Nicholson

Relax and Unwind during Heart Hikes at Ritchey Woods
Fishers is a community buzzing with energy, and yet, sometimes it’s important to slow down and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. Heart Hikes return Friday, Feb. 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve and offer two convenient opportunities for residents of all ages to unwind and escape some of life’s everyday stresses.
Coordinated with Hamilton Southeastern School’s 2016 calendar, Heart Hikes fall on a half day allowing students, faculty and families in the community an opportunity to participate. Hikes are free to attend, and anyone is welcome to stop by during the program. Photographs of natural hearts line trails through the preserve offering a self-guided experience complete with a campfire and hot cocoa at the shelter. Heart Hikes welcome individuals embarking on a solo-serenity hike, couples enjoying time together, the business community during their lunch break, and families seeking quality time together.
Planning to stop by on Friday, Feb. 5? Consider bringing a book to donate to the Little Free Libraries that are in some of our parks. During the Heart Hike on Friday, HSE Destination Imagination students from Riverside Intermediate School will be collecting books to raise awareness about their Little Free Libraries and Trail Etiquette Program. The team will be presenting their project to a statewide audience in March. Learn more about Destination Imagination by visiting their website.
