Cedar Grove Friday Flash
November 3, 2023
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Our first fall festival was a huge success with lots of games, prizes, food treats, and more! Special thanks to Ms. Gutierrez, chairperson, who organized this wonderful event as well as all those who offered their time to assist where needed. Also, many thanks to Butler's Orchard for donating numerous pumpkins for this fun event!
Our composting program is off to a great start, as students were able to collect and divert 353 pounds of food from landfills and incinerators in September 2023! We appreciate our students' efforts in support of our Green School endeavors.
Parents, if your child participated in the January/February 2023 ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners) or Alternate ACCESS for ELLs assessments, your child’s Individual Score Report(s) have been delivered to the post office for mailing to your home. In addition to the score reports, you will receive a guide to assist you in understanding your student’s score on this assessment. Please allow at least one week for delivery from receipt of this message. If you have any questions about your student’s ACCESS for ELLs scores, please contact the school office.
On Wednesday November 8, we will have our first PTA cultural arts assembly of the year. Mark Dantzler, children's book author and fan favorite Cedar Grove E.S. substitute, will be here to present his children's books to the students and talk to the audience about the writing process. If you would like to pre-purchase any of his books, here is the flyer. This will also be distributed after the program.
Last but not least, thank you to all the parents who planned and assisted with the fall class parties. The children had a wonderful time!
Have a great weekend!

Personal Body Safety Lessons
During the month of November, our school counselor, Erin Spoales, will be presenting a lesson on the topic of child abuse and neglect in every grade level. These lessons are known as Personal Body Safety Lessons (PBSL). The purpose of these lessons is to help students:
· Develop knowledge, decision making skills, and behaviors which promote safe living in the home, school, and community;
· Learn skills for self-protection and identifying child abuse and neglect;
· Learn skills for asking for help for self and others and practice reporting to a trusted adult; and
· Engage in positive and appropriate interactions with peers and adults.
If you have any questions or concerns about the topics that will be covered, please contact our school counselor, Erin Spoales at 240-740-6190 or Erin_M_Spoales@mcpsmd.org
Reminder: Parent Open House/Parent Visitation
Our parent visitation/Open House is on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 9:30 until 11:00 and again from 2:00 until 3:00. Parents are welcome to come and visit their child's classroom, but please do not bring siblings during this time. During Open House, the blacktop will be open for parking; however, vehicles will need to be removed from the blacktop by 11:15 and 3:15, as students will be going out to recess and will be on the blacktop for dismissal. We hope to see you then!
