Steeple Run's Best News Source - Week of 1/11
Principal Update
How wonderful it was to be back together after our winter break, while breaks are always important and appreciated we always look forward to welcoming back our Super Star students. As we head into the coming week our faculty, staff, and administration are working to ensure a smooth transition into Hybrid Learning. We appreciate the feedback we received during the week of online-only hybrid in October. We hope that the lessons learned in that short time help with our success moving forward. While Hybrid Learning is a solution that allows us to come together within our current guidelines we understand it can feel and may in truth be a compromise in other respects. Please know our goal is always to do the best we can with what control we are given, our hope is that thanks to the strength of our community and its shared commitment to our children's success that we will be able to weather any challenges together.
Below you will find a message and resources provided by our Social Workers in response to events that took place within our nation last week. We understand each family may structure their home differently and our students may have a great deal to no exposure to the current news cycle, for this reason, and to respect the sensitivity and nuance of these conversations these resources are for our Super Star families to use at their discretion. We continue to be thankful for the strong partnerships that make our school community great.
Message from our Social Workers
Children can be affected by images and stories of people in distress, violence, discord, and confusion in the media. Children can become anxious and fearful of the world around them. After the upsetting events in our nation’s capitol this past week families can offer reassurance to their children to help them feel safe.
What to say and do when the news is scary and uncertain - tips for parents:
· Limit exposure to breaking news (graphic details, disturbing images or sounds)
· Provide concrete, basic information based on age
· Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know right now”
· Share reassurances of what is being done to keep them safe
· Take cues from your child and answer their questions
· Encourage processing of the information in art or play which helps them create meaning
· Continue to follow your daily routine. Routine activities provide stability and promote a sense of safety, especially for younger children.
· Use your support network to process your feelings

Return to Learn 2.0
A reminder that our transition to Hybrid Learning will take place the week of January 25th. See the schedule broken down by grade level pictured below. As all families were given the opportunity to reconsider their in-person/online choices we are currently in the process of balancing classrooms and considering factors such as transportation, onsite childcare hours, support for students needing Special Education services, grouping in-person and online-only students, and much more. Please be aware that there are many reasons, including high volumes of changes to the October selections, that could result in changes to AM/PM assignments. Final AM/PM assignments will be provided to parents/guardians by Thursday, January 14, 2021.
Student Self-Certification Form
Once your student begins attending school in-person, D203 will be following IDPH and ISBE guidance and requiring each student to undergo a daily symptom screening prior to utilizing D203 transportation or entering any D203 building. Parents/guardians will be responsible for conducting daily symptom screening and temperature check prior to their student departing home for any in-person instruction or any other D203 sponsored event.
All Parents/Guardians are required to complete the Student Self-Certification Form prior to a student participating in in-person instruction. Students will not be allowed to participate in any in-person instruction until this form has been received.
As an additional precaution, temperature checks will be conducted each morning at student entrances. Temperatures will not be recorded daily. However, any student exhibiting a temperature at or above 100.4 will be required to be picked up from school and may not return until the Return to School criteria have been met and the student is fever free without medication for 24 hours.
Families are asked to monitor their students closely for any of the following COVID-19 symptoms:
Temperature of 100.4 (or greater) degrees Fahrenheit/38 degrees Celsius;
New Cough;
New onset of moderate to severe headache;
Shortness of breath;
Sore throat;
Nausea and/or Vomiting;
Diarrhea;
abdominal pain from a unknown source;
New congestion or runny nose;
New loss of taste or smell;
Fatigue from an unknown cause;
Muscle and body aches;
Any other COVID-10 symptoms identified by the CDC or IDPH
Students experiencing any of the above symptoms should remain home and caregivers should report the symptoms in writing to the school nurse. We are required by IDPH to consider any student experiencing one or more the symptoms of COVID-19 as a possible case unless we receive an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider. Students must meet Return to School criteria in order to participate in in-person learning or any other D203 sponsored event.
In addition, we are asking that Parents/Guardians certify the following each day:
Has not experienced any of the above symptoms (without an alternative diagnosis) in the 10 previous days;
Has not had close contact with any individual that has tested positive or has a presumed case of COVID-19 within the last 14 days;
That no one in the household is currently being evaluated for COVID-19;
Has not tested positive COVID-19 in the last 10 days; and
Has not been asked to self-quarantine or self-isolate for any reasons associated with COVID-19.
Thank you for your ongoing understanding and support as we implement these recommendations provided by the IDPH and ISBE. Please reach out to Principal Louis or our school Nurse Francine McCabe (fmccabe@naperville203.org) with any questions.
