This week's Bobcat is dedicated to some of our extra-curricular organizations and athletic teams. We are extremely proud of these students, as they put in extra time and effort to be successful in and out of the classroom. Go Bobcats!
Bobcat AFJROTC
Mission: Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving our Nation and local Community.
Purpose: Building Better Citizens for America, Texas and the Rio Hondo Community
Vision: Provide quality citizenship, character and leadership development program, while fostering enduring partnership and relationship with our high school, our school district, our local community that helps meet our citizenship development mission.
Upcoming Activities (11 October to 21 December 18)
- 23rd Annual Veterans Day Program with Congressman Filemon Vela (Tx D-34). 12 November in the Large Gym and Luncheon for Veterans and their spouses in the AFJROTC Tx-9611 Hangar II.
- Golden Corral Annual Veterans Day Dinner (our cadets act as chaperons & bus boys & girls) on 12 November
- Thanksgiving Food Drive for needy families in Rio Hondo (12-16 November)
- City of Rio Hondo Christmas Parade on 8 December.
- 23rd Annual Cadet Military Ball on 14 December 2018. To include Kitty Hawk Air Society Induction for both Principal Ruvalcaba and Dean Jaramillo and other new teachers as Honorary Members.
- Salvation Army Bell Ringing on 15 December at Harlingen Wal-Mart (8:00AM to 8:00PM) - Corps of Cadets.
- Christmas Food & Toy Drive for a need RHHS family (17-21 December).
So far, we are off to a good start to our 2018-2019 School Year !!!
Mighty Bobcat Band
The Bobcat Band is currently in the middle of BANDTOBER competition month. Last weekend the band placed second at the Mercedes Queen City Marching Festival and they would like to thank everyone for the Bobcat spirit. The Band is currently preparing for Pre- UIL marching competition in Calallen, Texas on October 13, 2018. October 20, 2018 is Pigskin this year and it will be held at Mercedes Stadium. This being a State competition year the band is hopeful to return to the Alamodome and show the great State of Texas what we are made of. Go Bobcats!
Bobcat Cross Country
Varsity Cross Country Team competed at the District Meet held in Hidalgo on Monday 10/8/18. The girls’ team placed 4th; one shy of making it to regionals as a team. Jasmine Rangel came in 4th place and Jazaline Ayala placed 7th for the girls to advance to regionals, also competing was Mia Zuniga, Rebecca Rodriguez, Julie Del Bosque, and Averie Macias. The boys team came in 5th place, Johnathan Ayala came in 22nd place followed by Derek De la Cerda in 28th and also running well was Derek de la Cerda, Christopher Garza in 30th.
Bobcat Football
The Varsity Football Team remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 14-7 win over La Feria Friday night. Danny Vasquez scored a touchdown and Cesar Figueroa kicked 2 field goals. Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Derek Castellanos, Jorge Silguero, Troy Macias, Justin Flores, Gabriel Martinez, Joey Ortega, Jesus Garay, Christopher Garza, Cristian Soto, Juan Lopez, and Isaac Rodriguez. On Special Teams, Gabriel Martinez recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff to set up a field goal. The Cats will enjoy a bye week before matching up with Raymondville in the district opener.
Josiah Ortega was named Mr. Texas Football presented by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Player of the Week. This is a great honor for our program and our city.
Lady Cats Volleyball
Our Varsity Volleyball Team is on a roll and getting hot at the right time just before the post-season begins. Lady Cats are currently 6-5 in district play and holding on to their 4th place playoff spot. Our team consists of Freshman, Alexis Rhyner and Alyssa Silguero, Sophomores, Kelsey Pizarro, Savanna Gonzalez, Julie DelBosque, Emma Serna, Mia Zuniga and Dominique DeJesus, Juniors, Cassity Villarreal and Hilary Aguilar, Seniors, Taylor Gomez, Amber Gonzalez, Ana Saucedo, Averie Macias, Chasity Villarreal and Leslie Adame. Dealing with some losses early in the season the Lady Cats have prevailed and collected some important wins along the way such as Zapata and Grulla on our home court. Leading the way in the Setter position is our Quarterback Amber Gonzalez doing a phenomenal job running our offense. The Lady Cats are looking strong defensively with Savanna Gonzalez, Julie Del Bosque, Mia Zuniga, Kelsey Pizarro and Taylor Gomez leading our back row defensive system. In the front line is Taylor Gomez, Kelsey Pizarro, Hilary Aguilar, Alexis Rhyner and Alyssa Silguero earning offensive attacks to put the Lady Cats on the board. As the last three games are approaching, we are looking to stay focused and continue the growth in our young team. The Lady Cats will be on the road the next two games, Port Isabel on Friday, October 12 and Progreso on Tuesday, October 16. We will close out our season on Monday, October 22 at Home vs La Feria - Game times are 9th & JV at 5:30, Varsity at 6:30. Please come out and support our kids at all levels as we would love to see our staff cheer on our student athletes from the stands! GO CATS!!!
