Wesleyan Service Scholarship
Early Acceptance Period: Now through November 1st
Attention: High School Counselors & Club Advisors
On behalf of the Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development at West Virginia Wesleyan College, we are looking for your help in creating a bridge between your amazing students and the Wesleyan Service Scholarship. First, we want to express our gratitude for the work you do every day to support motivated and engaged students in your community, especially in these uncertain times. We understand and recognize the positive impact you make on your students' lives during their time in high school and beyond.
We recognize your role gives you direct access to students whose values align with those of the Wesleyan Service Scholarship, a cohort-based scholarship focused on leadership and service. We invite you to help us build a bridge. We have our arms extended, awaiting the opportunity to take rising leaders under our wing and continue to develop them. Could you take just a few minutes of your time to observe the graphic below? As you reflect on the roles we’ve highlighted, we hope a high school senior comes to mind. If so, will you commit to the next phase of building the bridge?
We have added the link to the Wesleyan Service Scholar application below and shared a resource about our program. We are also more than happy to reach out to students directly. To do this, we have included a link to a Student Nomination Form where you can tell us about a passionate and incredible student and include their contact information. By taking one of these steps, we can celebrate both the establishment of a bridge between your community and ours and another way you are making a difference!
Thank you again for everything you do!
Stay well,
Jessica Vincent & Andrew Moffa

Senior Spotlight: Abby Shaffer
For Abby Shaffer, a senior history major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, being a Wesleyan Service Scholar has been a transformational experience in more ways than one. Abby is the site leader for the Clothes Closet, a community resource right next to campus that provides the Buckhannon community with affordable household items and clothes of all kinds, including winter jackets and professional wear. Abby sees the Clothes Closet as a place that enables community members to find clothes they want to wear that make them feel confident and safe. While her tasks may change, Abby spends a lot of time sorting through donations and occasionally works the register. Throughout her years volunteering, Abby has become an integral part of the Clothes Closet family and enjoys mentoring the younger Service Scholars at her site.
As a Service Scholar at the Clothes Closet, Abby is able to be part of something bigger than herself and has learned vital lessons about accountability and personal responsibility. Each week, the staff and volunteers at the Clothes Closet count on the support of Abby and the other Service Scholars at the site. They are relied upon as part of a community of people who help sustain an incredibly valuable community resource. Abby notes that knowing other people are counting on her presence and energy motivates her even during the busiest weeks of classes. Attending her service site is so much more than a requirement for a scholarship; it is the part of the week that Abby always looks forward to, as she knows that her work at the Clothes Closet affects not just her but the entire Buckhannon community.
The relationship between West Virginia Wesleyan College and the town of Buckhannon is something Abby thinks about quite often, and she believes it is imperative to give back to the community that has given so much to her and to all Wesleyan students. While Buckhannon is not the permanent home for many students, the town and the campus are so intertwined that it is difficult not to have an emotional attachment to both. Abby’s time as a Service Scholar volunteering at the Clothes Closet supports her belief that “Wesleyan is part of Buckhannon, and Buckhannon is part of Wesleyan.”
