BOOK FAIR FOLLOW UP - Worth sharing!
The Book Fair was a great success! The Books & Brownies was a complete TREAT! Both students & adults enjoyed it. We were very busy!
Attached you will find a photo of the books that Ms. Bruns has purchased from the Book Fair for the Media Center. WOW! is all I can say! How exciting!
Now - on to the good stuff!!! This week we have seen so many of our Habits at work.
1. Students coming in, asking how much money they have BEFORE looking for a book.
2. Students making the decision to put things back because they didn't have enough money.
3. Adults stepping in to "fill in" and give money where the student was short.
4. A few parents purchasing books for students who otherwise would not have had a new book.
5. A student gave up what she wanted so her sister could get what she really wanted because they didn't have enough money between they two of them. A parent overheard the conversation and purchased THAT item for the student that gave up her choice.
The Habits are working and our media specialist team got to see them played out this week.
The MOMO Challenge
As some of you know the Momo challenge is impacting some of our schools. There is really not much we can do to block anything related to this event, per our district.
The issue right now is that students are searching for things about momo on their devices. Please remember to be diligent about moving around the room to monitor student use of the devices. If you are concerned about the conversations you are hearing in the classroom, please let Cheryl know. This would be a good opportunity for our TLC to review internet safety with your class, as necessary. The district has advised all TLCS not to go into every classroom talking to students since this might make them aware of a situation they knew nothing about.
If a student has come across anything related to the momo challenge and is distressed or emotionally bothered in any way please pair the student up with our school counselor.
Here are a few Youtube Tips:
Plan ahead.
Preview & assign Videos using a link. (Don’t search while students are watching. Your login is not filtered as strictly as students)
Only let students search for videos using safe sites such as Discovery Ed.
If they need to search youtube make sure they are using their student login and express the importance of “see something say something”
Make sure that you know what your students are watching – the Momo Challenge has been known to “pop up” in cartoon shows, such as Peppa Pig, as well as in the popular Fortnite videos.
BRIGHT BYTES SURVEY
We want to honor your time. You can take this on your own by following this link: www.BByt.es/VT9TT
Here are the directions pulled directly from BRIGHT BYTES:
Take 15-20 minutes to help your school improve its use of technology. This is an anonymous survey regarding your technology use. It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Your answers are very important! They will help your school choose the right technology for your classrooms. There are no right or wrong answers. Everyone will have a different set of answers to these questions, depending on his/her different experiences. Thank you for your time and ideas!
Once you complete the survey, please complete the form confirming that you have taken the survey: https://goo.gl/forms/fwnIKSRF0hQhu3SE2
Time will be provided to you at next Monday's staff meeting if you don't take the survey prior to then. However, if you do take the survey in advance, you will be excused from the staff meeting while others are provided time to take the survey. The survey must be completed by all Pontiac certified staff by Monday, March 18 at 5pm.

TEACH TO LEAD OPPORTUNITY! A message from PATRICK KELLY:
I've enjoyed reading through your idea submissions for the "99 Ideas" pilot in the district! As I've read through the ideas, two thoughts have consistently come to mind. First- our staff has some GREAT ideas that could make a meaningful positive difference for students. Second- all of these ideas are perfect for the Teach to Lead format!
As you have probably seen or heard, Richland 2 will be the first district in the southeastern United States to host a Powered by Teach to Lead Summit. A Teach to Lead summit is a 100% teacher-driven form of professional learning where teams of educators are given the time, space, and support to develop an idea and prepare for its' implementation in their school. Roughly 90% of the time at a Teach to Lead Summit is dedicated to teacher teams working on building a logic model (action plan) for their idea. The other 10% is dedicated to quick skill sessions focused on idea implementation and words of encouragement from a dynamic panel of speakers- a former National Teacher of the Year, an educator currently on the NC Board of Education, and a former Richland 2 student that is studying to become a teacher!
Our Teach to Lead Summit will be June 18-19 at R2i2, and I would love it if you would consider submitting your idea for the Summit. All you need to do is gather 2-4 other individuals that can help you develop your idea (these individuals can come from any Richland 2 school!), and then complete this brief application. The deadline to apply is March 14th, and selected teams will be informed by no later than April 8th.
