Adult Learner Day
A Message from the Leadership Team
This past week we had the opportunity to attend the 32nd annual Florida Literacy Conference with a group of teachers. This is the premiere literacy event in the state and we came away with new skills and practices from the workshops that ranged from: digital literacy in the information age; bridging learners to GED test prep; ABE and ESOL reading strategies; to work readiness for ESOL beginning levels and more! The sessions were presented by local, state and national adult educational leaders. We were proud to be represented among these leaders: Khris Betten-Jutasi, Scott Schnappauf, and Marie Coleman did an amazing job with their presentations. One of the highlights of the conference was adult learner day. Again, Collier County Adult Education was well represented. We had two busloads of adult learners participate: twenty-four from LWTC and fifteen from ITECH. Our student attendees participated in workshops and lectures that were relevant and meaningful. Adult Learner Day’s culminating session was one in which adult learners shared their experiences, struggles and triumphs (see pictures for CCAE students participating as readers). This was a powerful and emotional session that helped put into focus why we do what we do and why we love doing what we do! Teachers, support personnel and coordinators thank you for all you do! You are doing great things!

Now that we know the basics, let's move on to Buying a home.
This week let's look at To buy or not to buy?ESOL Teacher Resources
The Florida Literacy Conference was jam packed with great resources and new insights. I will share the information with you in bits and pieces so not to overwhelm!
Integrating Digital Literacy:
- http://lincs.ed.gov-provides information, resources, activities that provide students with high quality learning opportuniites.
- http://www.digitallearn.org-5-30 minute courses on tools to help tackle technology.
- http://www.quia.com/shared- web-based games for skills practice.
One of my favorite sessions was with Roberto Guzman, professor at University of Puerto Rico (also on Ted Talks). His presentation was ESL classes:Entertainment? Certainly Not. Entertaining? Probably Yes: Exploring teaching strategies that stimulate students' interests allowing them to acquire higher level English language skills.
My "take aways":
- Teachers must create a classroom that meets the needs of the social environment integrating technology into classroom activities.
- "Memorization of endless rules and grammar driven courses will not work."
- Use video clips to encourage questions
