HIV/STI & Sex Education Legal Obligations and Best Practices
Tobacco- & Vaping-Free Schools
In July 2022, Governor Whitmer signed several bills into law to raise the minimum age of sale from 18 to 21 years old for tobacco products, vapor products (such as e-cigarettes), and alternative nicotine products (such as nicotine pouches). This means tobacco retailers can face penalties for selling these products to anyone under 21, and this policy is enforceable at the state and local levels. If schools notice that local retailers are selling these products to students under 21, they can report potential violations to the Food and Drug Administration, state or local law enforcement, and the Synar Program. For more information about Michigan’s tobacco laws, contact the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Tobacco Section at 517-335-8376.
Tobacco-Vaping Free Schools Initiative
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation and CVS Health have united to reduce tobacco and e-cigarette use in schools and districts nationwide. In collaboration with the foremost experts and trusted partners in tobacco policy and youth vaping, they want to engage stakeholders in school districts nationwide to effectively reduce e-cigarette use in school communities by providing intensive, personalized support and resources. Their equity-focused and evidence-based policies and practices are designed to enhance existing efforts and provide professional learning opportunities to participating districts across the country. Visit the Tobacco-Vaping Free School Hub or contact Ryan Monroe at ryan.monroe@healthiergeneration.org for more information.
MOASH: The K-5 Consent Toolkit
The Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH) in partnership with sexual violence prevention experts across the state, is excited to announce the launch of a new resource: the K-5 Consent Toolkit!
This resource responds to the needs of teachers, parents, and caregivers for quality consent education for students in elementary school. The toolkit includes recommendations for specific resources - including curricula, videos, books, and websites - as well as best practices for implementing consent lessons with K-5 youth. Also included is an overview of Michigan’s standards for K-5 consent education and a guide to understanding local district policy to advance school-based education in your community.
