Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - January 24, 2022
Washburne Families,
Hopefully everyone stayed warm and safe over the weekend. With the winter weather and snow arriving we wanted to share a quick reminder that our doors do not open until 8:20am each morning. Please encourage your Washburne students to dress appropriately for the weather. Map testing begins this week and please see the sign up information for winter conferences located below.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Take care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton and Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal / Assistant Principal

Parents can schedule five minute conferences with each teacher on their child’s trimester 2 schedule. All families will receive detailed instructions for how to schedule appointments this week. Families can begin making appointments on Thursday, January 27th.
If you have not received instructions for scheduling your child’s conferences by Thursday morning, please reach out to Mr. Horwitz (benhorwitz@winnetka36.org).
Winter Map Testing
MAP testing will take place this week on Tuesday, January 25th. With testing in the morning, lunch periods will take place later in the day than normal. All teams will be providing time for a snack during the morning. Please ensure that your child brings a snack to school on Tuesday.
Boys Volleyball Information
The Boys Volleyball season starts this week. It will go from January 25 through March 15. We practice on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 and on Friday mornings from 7-8 AM. Matches are typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at either 4:00 or 5:00. We do have a few Monday matches.
The first day of practice will be Tuesday January 25th from 3:30-5:00pm.
With enough students registered for the program, we will have 2 teams, as we have with basketball and girls volleyball. Boys interested in playing this season should register online, and make sure the school has a medical clearance form or current physical on file. They should bring athletic clothing, knee pads, and a water bottle to tryouts and practice. Please contact Andy Becker at AndyBecker@winnetka36.org if you have any questions.
Window to Washburne
Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.
Even during the cold months of winter, Washburne students are able to stay physically active in Kinetic Wellness class. While there are many indoor sports for students to play in our gyms, we are also fortunate to have a fantastic Cardio Room with exercise equipment for our students to utilize. Students are able to rotate between different pieces of equipment, such as treadmills, exercise bikes, bench press, or free weights. While exercising, students are able to monitor their heart rates and track how different types of exercise increase or decrease their heart rates.
Kudos to our KW department for continuing to teach our students about best practices in physical fitness.
What's Happening in Related Studies
The creative writing students are starting to work on fiction writing. They began the unit by learning about the various ways that writers develop characters, such as through actions, dialogue, and thoughts. To playfully practice with the different characterization techniques, groups of students acted out skits demonstrating each method while the class dissected the performance. Some groups got very creative and even made masks! Currently the students are finishing up writing a scene about an invented character using two of the techniques. Next they will plot out a much longer story around that same character.

Centralizing the conferences on these two days are intended to support families who need to schedule conferences for multiple children as well as ease the burden on staff.
