NSTA Resources
April 2017
Below are some of the materials I received from the NSTA conference. I hope you will find them useful in your classroom.
Learn Genetics has AMAZING and FREE resources for life science and biology. Check out this interactive activity on building DNA molecules.
HHMI BioInteractive I can't say enough about this site. They have TONS of FREE resources for teachers and students. The lessons are built around a scientific lecture then the HHMI team adds graphics and interactive activities. You can also order their free CDs. This one is on skin color.
HHMI also offers
The Shape of Life has FREE videos based on the PBS series Planet Earth. Check out The World's Most Awesome Vertebrate Lesson.
Monsanto works to deliver agriculture products to support farmers all over the world. They developed STEM activities to support their cause.
Brain Facts is all about the brain. This video is about what happens to the brain when we learn something new.
Science Comics Resources Science comics are great lesson starters.
Where Art and Science Meet Great ways to engage students in the science and engineering practices. These ideas provide teachers with several ideas to build the connection between science phenomena and performance expectations. It is important to remember we aren't grading students on their ability to "do art" but in their ability to understand the explanations behind the science phenomena.
iDigBio makes images of thousands of archived specimens from around the world.
Buffalo.edu Case studies meant to link science with phenomena. This case study is on cell phone use and cancer.
Anneberg Learner is another site with great case studies. This one is on Hepatitis B.
Important Points to Remember
- Phenomena - This is anything that makes you think.
- Model - This is not simply a 3D representation of something else. A model is used to explain phenomena.
- Art - Don't grade on a student's ability to do art in science. Grade on the students ability to convey he or she understands the reason behind the phenomena represented.
- Case Studies - These are great for providing background information to phenomena and allowing students to apply concepts to developing relevant science models.
