We Are Learning...
Reading
This week in reading we talked about how readers grow in longer fiction books. We used some the strategies learned earlier in our year and dug deeper into understanding how we can use these with longer books. The strategies we talked about this week included rereading specific parts of books, noticing how pages go together and changing our voice and the voices of our characters voice. We have been using one of my favorite picture books for this, Saturday and Teacakes by Lester Lamnick. This week we also focused on a characters internal and external traits. We discussed that external traits are traits that we can see on the outside of someone. For example: I have long brown hair, I am short, I have freckles, etc. Internal traits are those that we see more through a character or persons actions. For example: an author might not mention that Lester loves to read, but if he is doing it a lot throughout the story, it would show us that he does. Or we could see that a character was caring in the way that he/she treated another character.
Writing
This week in writing began to uncover our opinions about the books we read. Students gathered more of their favorite books. They used these books to look at titles, covers, and lessons the story teaches us. Students continue to write letters to other readers trying to persuade them to read these favorite books. Students then picked one letter they had written and decided who and where they would deliver their letter.
Math
Don't forget that playing games at home is a great way to build upon some of the math concepts we are working on at school. Battleship help us with ordered pairs and coordinate planes, Monopoly and Monopoly Jr are all about money, Checkers and Chess are all about strategy and problem solving. This winter break get out those games and try to sneak in a few as a family! I played Checkers with my Luci this weekend and it was so fun for me to see how her brain works. :)
*Did you know many of your kids know how to play Chess? They learned at school by playing No Stress Chess. It is a wonderful way to learn and our school has a lot of them. If you'd like to borrow one for a night or a weekend just let me know and I can send one home with your child.
A Moment with Mrs. Chadwell - The TCE Global Studies Instructor
In 2nd-4th grade the students began sharing their research through their posters, i-Movie’s, PowerPoints, videos and picture collages. They have impressed me and have seemed to really enjoy having some freedom to choose their own country to study. Hopefully you have heard them chatting about what they have learned or what they are doing in our class with their research! We will finish this all up next week just in time for our Winter Break! Next week, I will not send out another newsletter blurb as it will basically be this same information. I hope your children have enjoyed this class as much as I have enjoyed teaching and learning with them. Thorpe Creek is a special place and I am truly going to miss being here…….until next year!! After we return from Winter Break the students will be working with our amazing Spanish teacher Mrs. Zimmerman. This will be their 3rd year with her and she will continue building upon the language pieces they have learned in the previous years.
