An Attitude of Gratitude
So how do we integrate it into our classrooms and our own lives? For students, psychologist Maurice J. Elias has compiled a list of several classroom activities that help students "reflect on and express gratitude." These activities, some public and some very private, take very little time and can be applied in different subjects and grades. Try out one or more of them and see the positive change in your students and your classroom culture.
For us adults, check out the four strategies to refuel and focus on the positive offered by Rebecca Alber. From choosing to surround yourself with people who motivate you to revisiting those notes from students and families past, she outlines a few quick and easy ways to draw positive energy from what's right rather than what's wrong. Why not incorporate them into your work and life and see what difference they bring about.
We all have many things for which to be grateful. Among those is the opportunity to work with a very committed and talented group of educators every day. I've always known this, and it was validated again just today by MCPS staff who had recently spent time in several of our classrooms. Among the positive feedback they shared was the level of skill they had seen in both instruction and relationship building. I was one proud principal! Thanks to each and every one of you for all that you do for our students, our school, and the community.
