One Book, One Unami
Summer Reading 2016
What does "One Book, One Unami" mean?
This summer, the entire Unami community will share a common experience by joining together and reading Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick.
All incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th graders will read Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie as one of the two required summer readings. For the second book, students may read any title of their own choice as long as it is on their reading level.
During the 2016-2017 school year, there will be school wide activities that connect with this extraordinary book! In addition, we are excited to announce that the author, Jordan Sonnenblick, will be visiting Unami in October 2016. This exciting author visit is being made possible in part from an Innovative Learning Grant funded by CB Cares Educational Foundation.
We think it is such a great book that we encourage our Unami parents and families to join us and read it as well!
What is Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie about?
Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick is centered on the character of Steven and his little brother, Jeffrey. Steven loves playing the drums and is looking forward to an uneventful 8th grade year with as little annoyance from his pesky 5 year old brother as possible. His whole world is turned upside down, however, when one morning his brother slips and falls and his nose starts to bleed. However, this is no ordinary nose bleed and they soon discover that Jeffrey is battling leukemia.

Mrs. Wingerter loves this book because...
It really connected with my life. Not only is it set in Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia area, but my youngest cousin was diagnosed with leukemia when she was an infant. She spent many years going back and forth to CHOP for treatment during and after beating the disease. In the story the main character is also a drummer. He references Carter Beuford of the Dave Matthews Band. This band happens to be my number one favorite band of all time. If you are a drummer you must look up “Under the Table and Drumming” onYouTube. You’ll thank me later. As a teacher of English, I love how Steven, the main character, used his writer’s notebook to help him work through his emotions about his brother, his family, his love life, and his joys and troubles during his eighth grade year.
Mrs. Campbell thinks you'll like this book because....
Several of my students read this book for summer reading a few years ago and loved it! They said they “couldn’t put it down” and many of them got through it so quickly they read it twice.
Mrs. Christein explains...
This book is filled with believable, relatable characters, and while the story deals with some very tough issues, it does so with a great deal of humor and care. I was lucky enough to hear Mr. Sonnenblick speak at my local library last year, and I was moved to learn that, as a classroom teacher, he was inspired to write this story (his first novel) because a student of his was dealing with sibling who was very ill, and he wanted that student to have literature that spoke to her and her family’s very difficult experience.
